Thanks nimoh - and to you as well! I'm comfortable in singles and will be doing my fundies in singles too, so am looking for a rec pass. If the urge ever strikes to do doubles later on, I figure I'll get that on its own (and maaaaaybe one day upgrade myself to a tech pass). Achievable goals!

The literature so far looks excellent, and I will be reading it and re-reading it. Most of it is not new to me but man, it is a breath of fresh air compared to my PADI literature. :D

The thing I have noticed most often in other people's experience with the class is that they had problems with neutral buoyancy while task loading, so my plan is to practice valve drills and smb deployment (to provide the task loading) while maintaining neutral buoyancy and horizontal trim.

xdjio, I just want to applaud you for deciding to take the class in your single tank setup for a rec pass. First off, I think that's the right way to do things -- get an idea of the skill level early on, and then go work on it, and transition to doubles later, if you find you need them or you want to pursue technical training.

Second, I wish more people realized that this system of diving works EXTREMELY well for the single tank, purely recreational diver. There's nothing about standardized practices, working as a team, or strong personal diving skills that doesn't help every single dive one does, whether it's 7 miles underground, or, as my last week was, 20 feet of warm, clear water, photographing blennies. There are just too many photos out there of GUE divers in doubles and deco bottles and dry suits, and I think too many people think that's the kind of diver you have to aspire to be, to take or benefit from Primer or Fundies. It's not!

Best of luck on your fundies, question though, did you investigate an essentials course through Unified Team Diving? You have access to one of the best DIR instructors (Todd Powell) in Vancouver and he teaches through UTD. Cheers.

Sorry to say I didn't - for no particular reason other than the fact that the GUE folks got to me first :P
Not a problem, both agencies are very similar and can easily become a cohesive team, join the UTD website group for westcoast divers and it will give you access to a great community of supportive divers! Enjoy fundies!

Like this photo from my last three weeks in 86F water. 3mm shortie wetsuit, single tank etc.

The only other photo of me unfortunately is side on , at the end of my 4th dive of the day, and my knees might have dropped a little from tiredness, now way in hell am I posting THAT photo here :)

Doing the rec dives in proper trim was awesome. I could hover and look under ledges, without touching anything, where even the guides were hanging on and going upside down to do the same. Had great fun zooming across the sand just inches above, without leaving a silt trail. Brilliant.

OzGriffo, THAT's why I relentlessly promote this kind of training. It makes diving more FUN!
