I was planning on going to Egypt this Easter (19th April) for a week and although Marsal Alam seems to offer everything that I'm after I am concerned to hear that there is often an algal bloom between April and May.

Does anyone have any experience of this and know how badly the visibility is affected?
How likely is it that this would occur at Easter, is it almost certain or just a chance of?
If it is bad enough to avoid would Hurghada also suffer the bloom or would this be a safer option?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I always start my diving season in the El Quseir / Marsa Alam region in April and I cannot remember having been disturbed by algae. Hurghada is only 150 - 220 km further North why would the conditions be different, same temps for sea and air prevail.

never experienced such thing or even heard it is seasonal !
true visibility as water gets warmer (26+) is worse than cold water(21-25) but who said that water would be warm in April... it should be around 24
check the info in this website, it is the closest you can get for reality: WELCOME TO AZIAB

Hi,

I need to correct my statement. We had massive algae washed ashore in Coraya Bay Marsa Alam when I visited 2nd week of May. It took 2 beach workers several hours a day to comb it off and bury it right there at the beach. I didn't dive in the bay this time, we had no algae at other shore dive spots.
