Its a shame there is so much disarrray between the Cousteau family today. If they all united, they really be a voice for ocean conversation.

They've done some remarkable things, Currently working on getting shark finning banned in central america, they've been successful in other parts of the world.

Working very hard on teaching the local fishermen other means of economic potential in stead of finning.

Haven't heard much about Alexandra and Philippe recently, so it was good to read your posts.

I agree... too bad they can't join up with their uncle and cousins.

Yeah...all the infighting has gutted the "Cousteau Society". Even the Calypso is rotting away beyond repair in shipyard in France. Also the problem is...any documentary today on nature/wildlife/science has been "dumbed down". You are dealing with the "offspring of the MTV generation" with a attention span of 5 minutes or less. Sadly too, any documentary now has to have the catchy background music, quick cut editing and graphics. Also a host that comes off with a attitude or stupid demeaner.

Well we did not discuss family dynamics, the conversation was on saving sharks, around the world and how to re-educate the native people, fishermen etc for other economic opportunities and also ecological steps to save the reefs

Must say that they were down to earth and a pleasure to speak with

ZenDiva, I've known Jean-Michel for over 30 years and during that time worked with him on a number of projects, both his (documentaries, educational programs) and mine (same). I've always felt he was down to Earth as well. Never have had the pleasure of meeting either Alexandra or Philippe ("jr").

My disagreement with Jean-Michael Cousteau comes with his views against aquariums and zoos displaying cetaceans. I know there are substandard facilities that shouldn't be displaying them, but the bulk of them do a really good job taking care of their animals. Also they have advanced the knowledge and science about cetaceans that we never knew about them. You do more good for an animal when you can expose it to a greater amount of people in an aquarium, then trying to bring the same amount of people to the animal's enviroment and risk being determental to animal and its enviroment. We just lost the Yantze River dolphin to extinction. The vaquita (gulf of california harbor porpoise) is next unless we take some major steps to save it. Even if it means bringing it into captivity for it to survive. Another thing that really irked me was the whole "Free-Willy/Keiko" issue. They spent 20 million dollars on one orca that was a poor canidate for release into the wild, and ended up dying next to a dock in Norway. They wanted that "hollywood ending" so bad, that they lost sight of the fact that could have put that money towards saving sharks, the yanzte river dolphin, the vaquita, or even the last 300 right whales that are left.

I agree with JMC on that one. Cetaceans are too intelligent to be kept captive IMHO. It reminds me of all the humans whose daily existence is spent in a cubicle.

Well I posted this because I was very impressed with Alexandra's work and efforts to stop shark finning and shark conservation around the world in an effort to help save them and it's gone off on a totally different direction...oh well....such is the internet

You guys are worried about aquiraiums, what bout sites advertising the sale of shark fins? dolphins and sharks, whales being slaughtered while still alive their fins being cut from them and thrown back into the ocean to die....
