I think you are right Andy. People forget WE are the government.

H2Andy:
we elect the polititians and we tune to CNN and Fox and give them their
ratings...

so...

:54:

it's not a problem with the media, or a problem with the politicians.
if there's a problem, it's a problem with us.

there are, unfortuanately, no easy answers here

I agree with you on the media. Media is run by ratings and now there is a network from the other bias there will be true competition for viewers. That will either make the problem worse (the mob syndrome) or make it better (the responsible citizen arguement).

I disagree on politicians. Sure we elect them but our choices are pre-screened. It would take soemone with the instant popularity of Lindberg and no affiliations to break their grip on the system.

As for the problem with diving and homeland security. Divers need a lobby. I'm sure there is already one somewhere. The question is, is it well organized and does it get the full support of the certification agencies? With the cross section they offer it could be significant.

Unfortunately-people who are planning evil acts are smart enough to blend in. You cannot let yourself become caught up in the phobia of where will Al-Quiada strike next-just live your life one day at a time.

Um, Mania, take another look...

:11:
OK, depends on how you write it. Can be Brzeziński, Brzezinski or Brzezinsky...
Still closer than Zbrezinski.... :P

The fist two version, yeah... depending on what kind of keyboard you have. And since Zbigniew is a U.S. citizen...

The third, never.

Though I agree, it'd still be closer than "Zbrezinski".

(Sorry about all this, BIGSAGE136... ;) At least you got all the letters there!)

Pronounce it just the way it's written...

I was with the army in 2001 and was in the one of the 1st units in Afghanistan who engaged the Al Qaeda, and from 1st hand experience the suicide flunkies, have a horrible war cry before they do themselves in, be it bombing or running at you try to whack you.

I pose this question to you,

How are they going to do their mighty war cry underwater - Sub'ha'n Allah (God is Great) which is a requirement for them to get into the promise land, before they blow themselves up? :D

SeaHound:
I am not concerned about "underwater terrorists." I am more concerned about the SAFETY precautions authorities will take against them. Generally it means all ethnic minorities (especially those of Middle Eastern/South Asian/North African descent) will be treated as potential "terrorists." I have had this done to me once. I had a diving knife packed in my luggage which the metal detector picked. The airport authorities confiscated the knife and detained me for an hour. It was not even in my hand luggage. It was a TUSA rustproof, a very expensive one packed along with other dive gear. I later found out that divers from other nationalities didnt have problems bringing in their knives. I just find it unfair that they can just SNATCH your property and disgrace you at the airport cuz your were born different.

So much for "Due process of law" and "A person shall be secure in their person and property", what next?

This is HOW the terrorists are winning. WE are changing our laws and throwing away our freedoms right and left.

I wouldn't worry about it... and I wouldn't imagine that any sites would be "off limits".

Dearman:
If you want to stop terrorism, blanket coverage of their gruesome deaths, generation of public humiliation and scorn for their cause are the only way to slow recruitment. Unfortunately, we are unwilling to do this with our media. So we keep casting bullets hoping they will run out of recruits.

I disagree with this.

It is FAR better to ignore them publicly.
Never show the face of any terrorist or suspected terrorist on TV. Never show them dead. Present their attacks as accidents and 'minor'. Cut off the feedback that they are doing anything.
At the same time you arrest those that you can, bring them to trial, convict and punish. Those who are a major threat that cannot be arrested may have to be eliminated, but do it quietly, no press, they just vanish.

Terrorists feed on publicity, cut off the food.
