KansaiKitsune:
Sadly, the Egress Octo's on back order from my LDS' supplier so I gotta wait until August for that.

The free octo promo must be popular. Same at my LDS ,the XTX200 should be in Friday but the Egress octo is backordered:(

The owner showed me the Legend ACD tonight before class and we went over it, amazed me by how light they are. Not sure what were using for class dives but their bulky and dont seem to fit my mouth correctly. Seems kinda hard to breath thru to Might ask to use a Legend or other model to test on Thursday. Price was 459 for the Legend ACD. Not sure if that is what they are normally havent checked yet. Tomorrow I'm going up to spend so more time going over the different regs and maybe looking at the Transpac...damn BCD's ride up on me alot, and I adjusted this one tight, but not be the right size for me. Got my wetsuit a 3mil and used it in 81 degree pool water and it was nice. I tend to get cold fast.......alot of bouyance needed 4 more pounds to get it right, I float with my face above water even with everything off. I can see spending another 1500+ really quickly on a reg/spg and bp/w. Sheesh LOL

The ACD is new for 2006, but the price didn't change any. The Aqualung Legend (ACD or not) 'list price' is $495. 10% off is $445. You should be able to get that or more with buying a package, etc. You might hear the dealer say he can't sell it for below 10% off, which is what Aqualung limits them to, but it sure doesn't stop competitive dealers. 20% off would be about $395, which is pretty good. Some shops will sell it for 30% off too. I've seen it as low as $299

the "free octo" deal limits the price some also since Aqualung screws the dealer out of some of this deal.

Well talking to the owner of my LDs today, we went over regs and some bcd......I wanted to go with a more "streamlined" bcd.....dont like the bulk of a regular one we are using for class...bottom line AL Legend LX ACD, Sea Quest Balance with the alternate on the low pressure would cost me around $810. Didn't see much of a price difference between the regs...well Apeks was higher. The Legend has the Inhalation adjustment, which put it at 100 more than the one without it, not sure if I need it or not, but that's the price he gave me on the both. will try out both tomorrow night in class.

Buy either the Apex or the Legend. You want balanced first stages and balanced seconds too. Also the environmental seals help keep silt and dirt from getting inside. No, they don't just "help" they prevent it entirely. This matters is you will be doing much shore diving in poor viz. Sounds like you wil. I like my ATX50 and would recomend it unless you can pick up a Legend (with the same features) at a same or lower price. Don't buy a cheap octo. They tend to free flow if you get sand inside them which beach divers tend to do. I don't know which octo you get for "free" but don't acppect one of those slim line models.

If you travel make sure the places you travel to can service your reg. But this is really a non-isue with Aqualung

It's usfull. I like to adjust it to "very senitive" when I am under water. But with this setting it free flows on a long surface swim unless I'm carfull to hold it mouthpeice down. Also if you are doing clases, drills, teaching or whatever you can screw down the senitivity to provent free flows when the reg is out of yur mouth

An AL Legend LX ACD, Sea Quest Balance BC and an alternate/octo for $810 seems like a pretty decent deal to me. Figure out if you really want your octo/alternate on the LP hose to the BC though. some people like that, some don't. You'll need some gauges also to add to that. But even if you spend $150 bucks on gauges, getting that settup for under $1k is a pretty good deal. especially since the Legend Lx's MSRP price is $595.

Here's my opinion for recreational diving:
Aqualung Titan LX: This is probably the best bang for your buck within the Aqualung/Apeks brands. The price is right, it breathes very well, is light, and has a small profile. From what I have read, the Legend LX only breathes slightly better within recreational limits, but costs a whole bunch more.

Here's my opinion for technical diving:
Apeks: I just got a pair of the XTX100's a couple of weeks ago, for my first-time doubles rig. I looked exclusively at the Apeks line, as I'm very happy with my singles rig ATX50. I have about 15 dives on the XTX100, with 10 of them at or deeper than 100 feet in FL springs and offshore on the Mighty 'O'.

First Stage: I wanted to have the same first stage for both posts on my doubles. I like the better breathing from the FST (1st stage packaged with the 100 series) over the DS4 or DST (1st stage packaged with the 50 series). Personally, I didn't think the FSR (1st stage packaged with the 200 series) was worth the increased pricetag. YMMV

laivindil:
...The XTX adds notched breathing control rather then smooth, the ability to mount a hose on the left side of the reg and swappable exhaust ports (which no one I know of has had a reason to do). The XTX is also a little sexier looking...

Second Stage: The ability of the XTX series to change hose sides is not important to me, as I dive a traditional Hogarthian doubles rig (long hose primary, bungied backup). I like the reg size of the ATX series (smaller, lighter), but favor the exhaust port size of the TX series (larger, better bubble dispertion) for my primary 2nd stage. So I really like the swapable exhaust ports for the XTX series, which allows me both large and small exhaust ports, keeping the same 1st and 2nd stages for each post. I set up my primary reg to use the larger exhaust port to better direct bubbles away from my mask, and backup reg to use the smaller exhaust port, so I don't have such a large piece of equipment hanging from my bungie.

Conclusion: I spent several months weighing all of these factors, and even waited 2 months for the XTX series to become commercially available. Now that I've dove the XTX100/FST regs, I love them, and their exhaust port flexibility. It was worth the wait to get the exact regs I wanted, considering that I'll be diving these regs for a very, very long time in my furure. Even though my diving style may be different than others', but these are all factors to consider when buying regulators.

Let me know if I can pontificate any more :shakehead

Mike

BTW - since both XTX100's came with free Apeks Egresses (which I don't use), I have them for sale, if anyone's interested

I noticed the "free flow" when I use the wide open on the regs we're using in class and have gotten use to it so far. Asfor the alt on my low pressure - I like that idea more than having an octo strapped to me. Once haven't dove in this situation, but I like the feel of it when I wore the it in the shop. And am more comfortable with it since I'm using the the low pressure for trimming. More consisious where it is..etc.(Will be able to tell more tomorrow after diving in it)

As for the AL / Apeks differences..the prices I was quoted were that the Apeks was around 675 ( with the egress) I think even the XTX100 was the same price as the Legend LX ACD. The Legend comes with the Legend octo (cost 240 I was told) I would change that for the octo for the alt in the low pressure on the Sea Quest.

The Legend should only be used with the Legend Octo or the Egress (Apeks) octo because they are balanced. This is needed because of the increasing IP of the Legend and Apeks firsts. AL has a warning about this. The Legend Octo deal is a good one because it is so expensive.

If you really like the intergrated second then I would recommend the Titan LX or the new SP MK17 which doesn not have a rising IP.

I dive with the Legend and Balance and really like them both. I really like having the octo being the exact same thing as my primary.

Regards,

John
