how do divers with air2's (octo/inflators) release air from their BC's when ascending in an OOA situation, this is assuming they have donated their primary .. do they have to take the air2 out of their mouth to deflate or just use the shoulder dump.

I imagine you would have to use one of the dump valves on the BCD. Personally I would stay away from the Air2 and go with a standard inflator.

In the case of ScubaPro, if you look at the complete system, you will notice that the BC has an additional dump via a pull cord. Also, if the deflate button is depressed, air will vent out the end exhaust regardless of using the device as an air source.

Also, if the deflate button is depressed, air [-]will[/-] may or may not vent out the end exhaust [-]regardless of[/-] depending on the orientation of the diver using the device as an air source.

Fixed it for you.

I started with an Air2 and decided I did not like it and went back to a safe second. I am a big framed guy and in order to breathe off the Air2 I had to kink my neck around and could not look to my right. My preference? Bungeed octo. It is much easier to get to IMO.

Everything you need to know in the link above.
Summary:
- Using your right shoulder dump is by far the safest method if you're using a stock BC.
- Bp/W's aren't really compatible with Air 2's.
- Primary hose should be at least 40in on an angle adapter when pairing with an Air 2. This gives you back your options like a normal 40in traditional octo would. However the longer primary drastically changes the way you donate air from the Rec & Tec norm. Ideally go with the 44in length. (odd I thought I wrote that part in the link originally....)

If you haven't tried breathing off one, I seriously suggest you borrow one first and see what you think. I have never had one on my own kit, but have used them a few times in pools and during OW lessons with others, I had a similar problem to LowDrag in that I could not look to my right easily, and found the Air2 hose had a tendency to pull the mouthpiece at a awkward angle.

For dumping then I agree with RJP you could have difficulty venting, so best to practice using an alternate dump, for example the shoulder dump, but it is personal choice, it may work for you, it may not, but it is a gear investment you can't easily go back on if you don't like it, so borrow/rent try it first somehow, then make your mind up.

Best and dive safe - Phil.
