Me and the wife are flying to Bonaire at the end of the month using Air Jamaica, and according to AJ's website you are allowed 2 checked bags (per person) weighing up to 70lbs/each and one carry on weighing up to 40lbs and/or meeting dimensional requirements.

Has anyone flown with them recently and is this accurate in terms of number of bags and allowable weight? Also has anyone had any problems with check items like lights, knives, snips, etc?

Thanks for any info.

I've flown Lovebird several times from BWI. I've never had any problems with lights, knives, snips ectera. I will tell you they are very strict on their baggage policies. Jamaicans are notorious for wanting to bring everything including the kitchen sink when they travel back home.

There was a company at BWI by the airport terminal that would make money by saving them money. It seems AJ nails a big fee for overweight items and a lesser fee for additional item. They would repackage baggage for people in smaller boxes and shrinkwrap it.

Recently took AJ from BWI to Curacao. Bags were weighed very carefully. On the trip down we were on our own as divers so they went through things pretty thoroughly at BWI. Had to explain about several camera/battery/electronics items. Coming back we were with a group of 12 and by the time they got to us that had seen enough scuba gear. Didn't see anyone get charged for overweight bags, but then I was only really paying attention to ours and we were very close.

I took AJ from Logan/Boston through MoBay to Bonaire in September. We have had many horror stories going to Bonaire with ALM, AirAruba, and AA. This trip was flawless and actually got us there 30 minutes early. We were then able to make the dive briefing and get in the water the SAME DAY. We have already booked with them again for April.

They did weigh the luggage carefully, but we were within the guidelines so I don't know about assessing any additional charges.

I don't travel anymore with a knife after 9/11 - even checked so I can't speak to that, but nobody blinked at the camera equipment, lights, snips, etc.

HAVE FUN!!!

My husband and I flew AJ in Nov. with no problems at all. We checked two dive bags, two suitcases, and then carried on a laptop bag and a small pelican case with our camer equipment with NO problems at all. We flew from Atlanta to Bonaire and the crew at both ends were very helpful. I think one bag was just over the 70 pound limit and nothing was said.

Have a great time!!

Flew AJ from Chicago to Bonaire the last two years. Packed knives in checked luggage without a problem. We keep suitcases within the weight limits. Last year we packed a lot lighter and stayed longer. We cut down on the clothes, not the dive gear.
