Whitey:
Really I think people these days are afraid of interacting with people. They would rather spend there time staring at a computer screen then going to a shop and trying gear and really learning about it. whens the last time an internet site set your clock on your dive computer? Well? all you "expert" divers may know how simple it really is but new divers don't. At these big sporting good stores you get little snot nosed kids still in high school who dont know the first thing about diving just thrown into the scuba section. so your little extra money that your spending in the LDS is going to pay people very little to do a job they love and to pass along information to you.

I am an "online" kinda guy but it's not about avoiding interaction. I spend several nights per week socializing with dive club friends, anymore and my wife is divorcing me.;) It's about separating business from friendship, about conducting transactions at my convenience on my terms, and not dealing with attitudes.

As for setting the computer, RTFM. I'd be afraid to dive with someone who could seriously not figure out how to set the clock on their computer. But you're right, anybody that needs that degree of hand-holding should stay off the internet and deal exclusively with their LDS.

Ya' know... the one thing that KEEPS puzzling me... and the above is a case in point... if the internet flag wavers are SO happy with everything... why the heck do you even CARE whether the LDS has a working model or not? Why would you ever go to one? What the heck does it matter to you?

What puzzles me is how you only see it one direction. I showed earlier you a half dozen threads started to badmouth online retailers so turn the question around. Why do LDS fans keep telling us we need to support our LDS or else where we gonna get air?

Are you yanking the chains of those who DO support the LDS for the heck of it? Are you secretly crying out for acceptance? Are you trying to justify something? Are you somehow so insecure that when those of us DO talk about gettin' together at a dive shop you feel lessened by it?

Turn all those questions around and ask why the LDS fans are posting here?

Dudes... its YOUR dive... go dive it. But if you want to tell people who actually have started and are actively running dive shops how to do what you yourself DON'T DO... then I'd suggest opening up a consulting firm and seeing if you're really as wise and capable as you like to present yourself on the net.

Dude, we've had plenty of posts by Phil at Divesports and Larry at Scubatoys and Mike at Dive Right In and others, people who ARE actually doing it and doing it quite successfully. Those posts mirror what the online fans are saying here, in fact much of what they are saying has come straight from those posts.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to look around and see that online retailers are flourishing and LDS owners are dropping like flies. It is patently obvious that something is wrong with the LDS business model.

The one thing I don't think I've seen yet is an LDS owner coming out and begging for our input and consultation services... they got shops... we don't. That sez' something...

Fewer and fewer of them got shops with each passing day.

And its all because very buisness that dont succeed have a crappy buisness model, right?

And as to your previous statements that none in this thread have any experience with both ecommerce and retail shops..
Sorry to disappoint you, but youre wrong.. "newb"

The results speak for themself.

I dunno, Mr. Hound, but your posts are making me want to visit my LDS. Is that your ulterior motive? :-)

Yeah, you gotta keep them in business so they can fill my tanks as needed. ;)

I also couldn't get the gear I'm diving from an internet retailer. I dive primarily Aqualung/SeaQuest/Suunto...which cannot be sold online...EVER...PERIOD.

Except...that it is sold online...EVERY DAY...PERIOD.

From the Aqualung Website:

Unauthorized Dealer Warning
Beware of any retailer that offers to sell and ship our life supporting products by mail, for orders placed by phone or the Internet. These retailers are NOT authorized Aqua Lung Dealers. All authorized Aqua Lung Dealers must execute a Dealer Agreement that does not allow the sale of Aqua Lung products except "in-store." Many Aqua Lung dealers advertise on the Internet, but they are not allowed to deliver our products other than "over-the counter." This is our assurance that you will receive the proper pre-sale, point-of-sale, and post-sale assistance, and that only trained and certified divers will use our products. If you obtain our product from one of these retailers, your warranty is therefore not valid and we cannot offer you the assurances of quality and satisfaction afforded by the Aqua Lung Warranty Program. If you would like to verify whether or not a retailer is an authorized Aqua Lung Dealer, please call: (760) 597-5000.

Seems pretty explicit that AL products CANNOT be sold online with any support whatsoever.

And the following from ScubaPro/Uwatec:
SCUBAPRO UWATEC offers a FREE Preferred Parts for Life Program to all regulator owners (only offered through the purchase at an authorized dealer) which provides replacement parts for your SCUBAPRO Regulator, at no charge. We provide this service to help insure that your equipment is maintained to SCUBAPRO UWATEC's high standards. Since this equipment provides life support while under water, any sub-standard maintenance could be dangerous. Only the dealers in our network are authorized to perform this service and offer this program.
If you purchase your equipment outside our authorized dealer network, you will not be eligible to participate in this program. Neither SCUBAPRO UWATEC nor our authorized dealers will be responsible to repair your regulator under our Preferred Parts for Life Program. You will also not be contacted regarding post-sale notices regarding as upgrades or warranty information.
Also if the product is purchased outside the SCUBAPRO UWATEC dealer network in the United States, US Territories or Canada, the consumer will have to pay the full annual service costs for parts. All regulators purchased within the United States, US Territories or Canada, and through SCUBAPRO UWATEC Authorized dealers, are eligible for the FREE Preferred Parts for Life Program.
Additionally, if you have purchased a selected* UWATEC computer from an authorized dealer you are eligible for The Batteries for Life Program. When the batteries require replacement, simply return you computer to SCUBAPRO UWATEC. We will calibrate the computer and replace the batteries, free of charge. (a $400 value). Purchases from unauthorized dealers, will be required to pay full retail price for replacement and service.
*Smart COM, Smart PRO, Air Z 02, Air Z, Air Z Nitrox

And:

Consumer Alert! It is very important that you purchase SCUBAPRO UWATEC equipment from an authorized dealer only. SCUBAPRO UWATEC has established over 700 authorized dealers in the United States (a list is available at www.scubapro-uwatec.com). We feel that consumers will be served best when purchasing SCUBAPRO UWATEC life support equipment through our authorized dealer network. These dealers can provide the proper training and instruction on the use of SCUBAPRO UWATEC equipment.

While not as explicit about NO INTERNET SALES as the AL notice...they're still warning consumers.

Yes, this relationship is mutually beneficial for the LDS and the large manufacturers...obviously...but it also shuts the manufacturers out of a larger market. (on the other hand..it also limits their liability..in theory..)

And it isn't about "buying friends"...it's about having a place where "everyone knows your name", so to speak. I have developed a relationship with people at the shop that started with patronage and has evolved into more. Plain and simple...you have to start somewhere. (Then again...I can see why the less socially adept among us may prefer the internet to the LDS...)

Cheers,

Austin

Thought I'd do what, expect equity and fair play? Expect you to handle being asked the questions you like to ask? You're the one whining, asking why oh why, completely devoid of substance. Ya wanna be able to take your potshots at online retailers then run home crying to mommy when someone shoots back.

I had said "except...that it is sold online" every day. Such warnings wouldn't be necessary if it wasn't. You presume that all customers really care about paying lots more money to be "authorized".

Yeah, you're their favorite schmuck. Sorry to hear your choices are so limited.
