Jim- I did not actively expel air, but kept my airway open so air could escape as I ascended. Lungs were "empty" at the start of the ascent, only what was left after I exhaled from the previous breath. I breathe gently and do not forcibly exhale so there was residual air in the lungs.

If I ever have to do another one, I hope it is from 30-40 feet! After all, I'm not getting any younger!

I'm a new diver and a bit confused by the quote. Is it a problem to have the tank turned on full ?
