Tobin is right, that if you use any exposure protection, a SS plate can work out to be all the ballast you need. But I use the Kydex plate, because of the low luggage weight, and put XS Scuba weight pockets on the cambands, so I get the best of both worlds.

The best warm water rig I've dived is the Kydex plate with the 17 lb tropical wing. You feel as though you have nothing on but the tank!

Just buy a wing and get over it :D

I've had the small 18lb Oxycheq wing, Dive Rite Aluminum Plate, and now dive Halcyon.

I think it's important to consider your diving going forward and how 'optimal' your equipment needs to be. The 18lb Oxycheq was great with a wetsuit but now most of my diving is with a drysuit and it wouldn't be sufficient. I would have been better off going with a 30lb wing and steel plate from the get go.

One thing I like about Halcyon is that they seem to think of gear in a way that is optimal for most environments without splitting hairs on optimizations that can be concessions when looked at the overall range of diving you do.

I dive their 30lb wing and don't notice a meaningful difference over the 18lb Oxycheq. The very small advantages in streamlining and ease of dumping are more than made up for by versatility in a 30lb wing, in my opinion. It's also Made in America (as is DSS) and I prefer to support US made products when possible. They offer very good customer service on top of all the other qualities mentioned.
