Fellow Ontario Divers:

I am a newly certified diver and will restrict my dives to ONTARIO for now. (Next year Carribean- Look out)

Question: Is it advisable to take out extra "dive accident insurance" through D.A.N. (or the like) or is OHIP good enough for now. Is there anything that OHIP wont cover ?

I know the D.A.N. insurance is a good investment (not expensive) and has multiple plans from which to choose.

I know some "out of country" dive places wont allow you to dive with them unless you have proof of D.A.N. insurance (or equivalent). My daughter experienced that in the Caymans.

Any comments ???

YES yes yes YES yes YES.

A) it supports a good cause.

B) Some training organizations require proof of DAN insurance.

C) It supports a good cause

D) The Toronto General Hospital has managed to screw up incoming divers by not accepting ambulatory patients. Means you'd have to be airlifted to Hamilton. Time = brain. Better to have DAN and go to the USA if you get bent up in Brockville or something.

E) it supports a good cause.

ROTFL if I understand you correctly.... the answer is YES..... thanks Boogie

In addition, DAN covers the helicopter ride, I don't think OHIP does, but I could be wrong. Keep in mind, if you get bent in Brockville, you're going to Ottawa, not TO. Yes, I realize that was just an example.

Definitely - if you plan on diving a lot DAN is a very good idea. If you ever need emergency hyperbaric treatment, you should not run into any problems if you are covered with DAN. Other plans may require pre-payment, etc...

YES! Being caught without the right insurance is like being hit on the head with a hammer - you know it's painfull but you don't know just how bad until it actually happens to you.

I've just had an insurance situation and I will never be under-insured again!

I'm so glad this question was brought up....I've been wondering the same thing myself....

Guess I'll be getting insurance shortly....

My vote -- yes get it! Just a thought... what if you're on the St Lawrence on the American side -- and it's quicker to get to a port there rather than head back to Canada?

we dive the Niagara River as well...I guess the same would apply once you got through customs .... all kidding aside I'm writing the cheque this week.

You know it's a good thing to have when your parents start buying it for you.....LOL

When I was off on my first dive trip mom decided that it would be a good thing to have when out of the country and has been giving it to me as my birthday present ever since.

Their thoughts were $100/hour in a chamber vs. a $100/year insurance investment....

It was an easy choice.
