hi.

this is my first post here, i've been just reading a lot of nice and precious info.. haha

i'm preparing a trip to perhentian next week.
tried to book @ Flora Bay as it has korean instructor
(i'm with 2 non-diver who's gonna take OW course)
but they say rooms are fully booked(fan ones.. we are so out of money :'( )

as a lone backpacker, i've never made any reservation while
i'm travelling SE asia.. howere, this time it's different..
3 newbies.. :(

now i'm concerning accomodation there, is it okay to go there
without making a reservation?
i'm thinking about staying at small island(Kecil)..

plz give me any suggestions.. thanks..

you can try, but it's going to be difficult. I assume the dates are the 27th Aug weekend?

That weekend is Malaysia's National Day, which is a holiday. Most rooms in most islands are fully booked too.

If you're really interested, let me check for you, please PM me. I'll try my best for you.. they COULD have some rooms left.

there is other accomodation on Flora bay that way you can still dive with Ju Ju, you could even stay on one of the other beaches and walk round to Flora bay.

we will be there in feb to do our IDC and I cant wait

i dived with flora bay before, i dont think accomodation will be a problem as they have quite a number of rooms. Look for Asman, he's the local guy we dived with... have fun!

i'll be diving first time in perhentian this national day weekend. i can attest that finding rooms can be a pain during this upcoming holiday season. i was eyeing on suria perhentian dive resort, but they were overbooked (despite i tried to get more expensive room).

finally, i confirmed my room booking at arwana perhentian resort (on big island, at Teluk Dalam beach). even that, had to purchase deluxe sea view chalet, that was what only available for that peak weekend.

Hey all..

I'm a regular at Perhentian, and a really good place to stay on Besar is Mama's Chalets.
They have recently upgraded some rooms with A/C and also it's clean. It is managed by Aziz and you can call him to make a reservation. Please PM me for his contact. Price range: MYR60 - 150 per room.

Turtle Bay Divers is located next to the chalets, and believe me.. I strongly recommend diving with them. The DMs and instructors are great! I've been diving with them everytime I go to Perhentian for the past 4 years and I've also frequent the island 4 times this season.

I feel I have to warn you that although the dive operator (EAST MARINE) at Arwana may have the state of the art dive boats, THEIR INSTRUCTORS/DM & BOATMEN DO NOT HAVE GOOD ETIQUETTE ABOUT MARINE LIFE!!

I have seen during my recent dive at the Pinacles, where their instructor literally yanked out a Bamboo Shark from underneath a coral formation and stroked the poor creature!! While some new divers maybe excited to see this.. These creatures are nocturnal and when things like these happen they dont return to the area anymore.

In another incident.. the boatman from the same operator (EAST MARINE) threw his anchor into the water, and it crashed into a coral.. taking off a whole chunk!!

The grand finale.. another boatmen from EAST MARINE forgot to untie his boat from the buoy.. where some divers were making their safety stop.. the line was yanked up 3 meters with the divers, and when the line broke.. it just fell off!!

My GOD!!!!! And I did my OWD with them.. not a very informative instructor either!!

PLEASE PLEASE WE DONT NEED PPL LIKE THAT!

Thank you for your warning. I'll take a look at their behaviour and if indeed it is true, I don't mind mentioning about their poor ethique in my malaysia-islands.com website.

Having said that, I actually have dived with East Marine from Langkawi to Payar Island. I thought their service was professional. But maybe different personnel, different behaviour.

Also, East Marine won't be the only dive centre on that beach. I might be staying at Arwana Resort, but I've been known to go for different dive operators, not necessarily the same dive centre at the resort.

P/S: I've seen similar *poking* and *yanking* done by liveaboard divers in Sipadan as well as dive master from Redang Pelangi Resort.
