I love my alternate air source. I used it buddy breathing on a Rescue course and had no problem but that was in shallow water and I didn't have ascent problems. The reason I like it is simplicity. I'm an avid underwater photographer. Note I didn't say good :) Anyway, one less hose is the best. I use a back inflate BC so it wouldn't vent in an ascent. I guess I will have to use my teeth to hold the mouthpiece wile I vent with the shoulder dump. I realize that might be a future problem but I'm not switching. As I said, I love my alternate air source.

Are you looking up towards the surface, ascending vertically? For me, when I look up, it puts my low pressure inflator higher, making the air easily vent. I also use a back-inflate BC.

My significant buddy's dad dives with an inflator/secondary combo. He believes that it eliminates an extra hose and is therefore great.

One of his daughters was having trouble with her "octo" hose. It was always bowing out on her and being generally annoying. She came to me to ask what I thought. I looked at how her regulator was configured, shook my head, and smiled as I pointed out how it had been put together. All we had to do was swap the octo hose to one of the other ports on the first stage. The following dive, she was quite pleasantly surprised with how streamlined it had suddenly become.

Before you add money to your gear, take a good look at what you have and how it's configured. It could be that you have a similarly looney first stage setup, and a minute to swap something around may be all you need to be happy. (If you later decide you want your alternate reg to be on the end of a short, stubby hose, well, people dive that way, too, I suppose. :D)

Aww... I gave a real answer. Now I can't try out my new proto-smiley. Hmm... actually, why shouldn't I try it anyway (just in good fun), eh?
