@dumpsterDiver: I'm not going to argue with the content of your post. Out of curiosity, what do you teach your basic OW students to do in the event of a buddy separation? Do you discuss whether or not they should do a safety stop during a buddy separation scenario?

I am not so sure a safety stop might not have been a good thing to do.

1) We do not know how long the first dive was and the surface interval.
2) We do not know how good the OP is in making a blue water ascent at a slow speed.
3) From the account it sounds that the surface swim might have been a bit more physically stressful then normal.
4) Divers can and do get DCS regardless of diving well within the PADI tables.

There are many things to consider when making the decision to not do a safety stop and most OW certified divers would not have the theory background to make an informed decision.

Certainly the odds might be in favor of no DCS if you bypass the safety stop but then again you do not know if your lucky or not until it is too late. Maybe your a over 50 yo fat bastard and pissing bright yellow and it might not be your lucky day.

From an Instructors perspective the question should be what do your agencies teaching standards say to teach.

I've not taught scuba diving in a LONG time.
