New to all this and just spent an hour or so reading up on DIR and the controversy.
All I can say is wow.
idiotic ain't it. Not DIR, which is a well thought out idea, but the butt hurt feelings of those who oppose it se ferociously because of a name and a few loud mouths.

You know, I hate to see these conversations come back again and again to the conversations on rec.scuba. Somebody a lot of people greatly admire spoke a long time ago about the possibility of forgiveness . . .

Thal, it was my impression that at one time, you felt a lot of the ideas of the GUE system were acceptable, but you were unhappy with the inflexibility. Now it sounds as though you've joined the "George was rude so the whole rest of you suck" camp. I'm sorry to hear it.

A negative impression is quite a broad stroke.

Wait... did you just say "stroke" in a thread about negative impressions of DIR divers?

:d

I'd just like to say, "thank god that George was not the one telling everybody the world was not FLAT!"....IF IT HAD BEEN HIM, we would have several people here that would be very militant about how far you can travel before you fall off of the edge :-)

While I agree with you in essence, it should not be forgotten where it initial vial of vitriol came from. The current aversion to DIR can be laid cleanly at the door of George Irvine, regardless of how many subsequent apologies or explanations his later-day proxies have proffered.

Why should that even be relevent ... AFAIK, George ain't even diving anymore. He left WKPP years ago, and was never a part of GUE. So how does something he said 20 years ago affect anyone who wasn't on the old rec.scuba forum, or diving caves in the '90's?

This diving version of the Hatfields and McCoys gets really old after a while ... especially when it gets perpetuated by people who weren't involved in those days, and knows nothing of the history ... or even the topic.

Diving's supposed to be something we do for fun ... people would have a lot more fun if they'd just stop being so critical of someone else's choices and worry more about their own ...

A-freaking-men!!!!!!!!

I can definitely see where the OP's diver comes from. Personally, I feel the closed-off Tek-to-tek portion of the board doesn't help*. I was fortunate enough to have met some very cool 'DIR'-oriented divers before joining SB, so some of the things I've seen happen here didn't influence my opinion on the matter much... but the stereotype claim that "if it's not black it's not DIR" is not a complete exaggeration of the attitude some vocal DIR-fans displayed. It does seem to have become a lot less, which is a good thing. (or they might be hiding in their own little playground :D)

*I can see it being read-only, but completely closed off? In my perhaps not so humble opinion that seems a but elitist to me. You can se it's there but not look at it neener neener. Sorry, bit of a pet peeve :D

Why can't we just dive and have fun? As long as the person I dive with is safe and a good buddy, I don't care if they are using single backmount, doubles, sidemount or rebreather. If they need my air or my help, they have it and vice versa. The rest is just personal preference IMHO.
