... except on your drysuit ... ;)

I have a cap that says DUI Test Diver on the front. I was wearing it one day when a state trooper pulled me over on I-5 ... should've seen the look on his face when he saw it ... he thought it said DUI Test Driver ... :shocked2:

On my way to a DUI Dog Days in PA a couple of years ago I went by a sign: the red circle/slash over the letters DUI, and the words: "You can't afford it.."
Lucky for all that I am more mature than I used to be, or that sign might have ended up at the DUI test day with me.

American history is a great example of revisionism. The civil War had almost nothing to do with what is currently taught....just for example.

One can not change history, but they damn sure can write it so they look good, and even later on rewrite it.
Victors in any conflict always get first chance to write history, of course, and there is probably no history that we learn that is really true to the facts as all sides at the time saw them.

This past weekend at the Scuba Show, I got to meet one of the GUE reps/instructors here in So Cal. Nice guy, and I wish that I could remember his name! It was his opinion that while ScubaBoard has it's moments, it's about the healthiest place for GUE not only on the internet, but also in real time. His reasoning was that he and others were able to dismantle the prolific myths that have been invented to besmirch GUE and even DIR. Make no bones about it, he felt that the biggest problem was not with the naysayers, but with those few fidiots who came onto the internet with tough guy personas. I made a mention how I thought it was a good and essential move for GUE to distance themselves from their DIR roots and he readily agreed.

Too often in this industry, we see the attitude that "If I don't teach it, dive it or sell it, it MUST be crap" mentality. I don't fully understand this need for the either/or polarization we see in this world, but I hate it. I hate it in politics, I hate it in religion and I hate it in my hobbies. I especially hate it on my forum! :D
While I agree with you in essence, it should not be forgotten where it initial vial of vitriol came from. The current aversion to DIR can be laid cleanly at the door of George Irvine, regardless of how many subsequent apologies or explanations his later-day proxies have proffered.

Why should it not be forgotten?
If it's a personal thing with GI3, then hate him, not DIR

If, and when, GUE (et.al.) sufficiently distances themselves from DIR I suspect that it will be forgotten, but until then I don't guess that it will be, reason has nothing to do with, as they say, "reality sucks."

Hey Thal,

I asked earlier and I don't think anyone ever answered. I had never heard of George Irvine until this thread. Is the guy still alive?

George is still alive, Dan Volker dives with him regularly.

Was or is GI ever a member of, or associated with GUE though?
No.George was involved when there was about 100 wkpp guys that were DIR. He started the ball rolling. The ball rolled in to a few places it shouldn't have :-)

I have one of those caps. I was in a fast food restaurant and a young lady kept looking at me. Finally, she got up to leave but stopped at my table. She asked, "So how does that work? Do they give you a lot of cheap beer and have you drive around a course or something?"

That "r" is certainly easy to miss.

I wonder how many thinks it's diving under the influence after they catch the missing r, second explanation may be needed.
