It's not further away in terms of distance from the body. It is further away in terms of distance from the left post - more hose == more risk of entanglement, and having it hang below the plane of your body increases that risk. If it gets hung up in a low area where you do not have clearance to reach it, then that's going to be a bad situation. Not to mention the fact that it complicates loosening the crotch strap if you have to remove the gear (for example to climb out of the water).
Regarding the ability to "see" it, I am having a really hard time visualizing that. In my normal trim position, there is no way I could see a gauge hooked to my crotch ring, let alone read the numbers off of it. Also, I don't need to "see" the SPG on my hip to unclip it - I do that by "feel". If something happened where I needed to see it, then I would get my buddy's assistance to have a look (something that may not be possible if it's clipped to the crotch ring).
