Why can't this happen, and why doesn't the Dutch Gov do something like that?
The Netherlands have announced a plan to get tough on crime. For the first time in their history the Netherlands are sending a militia force to supplement local police in an effort to quell a growing crime problem. Bonaire, a territory in the Lesser Antilles has been faced with a pandemic of rising crime in recent years. A well known source has been quoted that the problem is "widely known throughout the entire Caribbean."There are two principal security agencies, which share responsibility for internal security: The Security Service of the Netherlands, which is responsible for intelligence gathering and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which controls the various police forces.
This can't happen because;

Red = A waste of money to "send" a militia force
Blue= Has not been proven that Bonaire has been "faced with a pandemic of rising crime in recent years"
Purple= You are the well known source quoted... So there is no reason to believe it

That is why the Dutch Gov doesn't do something like that.

Hey, PF, could you help us understand what it is about this that goads you so much? I mean, there are a lot more things in the world about which one could become impassioned or inflammed, but you have stuck on this thing of Bonaire.

I don't get it. :dontknow:

Personally, I'd like to be protected by the Dutch militia while diving off Bonaire. Of course, lack of such protection will not keep me from returning for the 4th time this year.

Good diving, Craig

I see this as an invite to criminals on Bonaire to "step up" their criminal activity... Before someone interprets this incorrectly let me explain the logic.

Firearms are against the law on Bonaire and crime committed with a firearm carries some stiff prison time vs. crime committed without a firearm.

A militia (based on US definition) is
  1. An army composed of ordinary citizens rather than professional soldiers.
  2. A military force that is not part of a regular army and is subject to call for service in an emergency.
  3. The whole body of physically fit civilians eligible by law for military service.

This denotes a military force with use of firearms.

Currently, police on Bonaire do not carry firearms. A militia will create armed military civilians. In turn, the criminals will begin to arm themselves and the level of crime (if not the number of crimes) will naturally increase due to the available cache of firearms that were not in the equation prior to the use of a militia.
---
It may sound odd from someone who is a member of the NRA, but in my opinion Bonaire is not a country where I want to see firearms legalized or introduced into the mix of the petty crime already on the island. If this were to happen I believe my feeling of safety when I am on Bonaire would be diminished greatly

Here we go again . . . :shakehead:

Give the tourists guns then.

Perhaps they're not aware of the problem. Maybe you should write to them about it, or at least email them and invite them to join the discussion?

they would just leave them in their rental cars at dive sites while diving... and they'd get stolen. IJS...
