San Carlos is about 13 hours from LA if the traffic isn't bad. I haven't dove there but it's supposed to be comparable to La Paz, which I love. There are some posts in the Mexico forum from people who have.

San Carlos (Guaymas) Mexico. Probably 6hrs. (250mi) from Tucson but you have to deal with the border crossing - not sure if there's a more direct route from SoCal.

Water s/b high 80's now it avgs. 82-88 all summer - clear and tropical except for the occasional plankton bloom. Most dives you see moray and spotted eels, lots of tropical fish, sometimes groupers and stingrays - and the sea lions come out to play if you go out to San Pedro Island - most diveops do. San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico

We stayed at Marina Terra and dove with Gary's. They have slow boats and fast boats - difference is maybe 1-2+ hrs. each way. All the boats leave from the marina behind Marina Terra so it's a good base - and nicer than avg. for the area. Desert Divers has a lot of current info on their website - http://www.desertdivers.com/

Given the price of gas these days, USAirways flies to Guaymas also. But that may not be any cheaper now given the price of Jet fuel...

The Bonneville Seabase in Utah is on my list of future dives. There is just something intriguing about seeing angelfish and nurse sharks in the Utah desert.
