reefdiva,
would be very interested in your thoughts about the flight. contemplating doing similar flight down to Bonaire. Have done the Newark Red-eye. Not real impressed as it was 12 hours late and its a red-eye...oh well.
Actually preferred the AA flights with their long layovers.
Are you coming back through Houston too?
thanks in advance for your feedback.
The only practical difference AFAIK between the Newark red-eye and the Houston red-eye is
the day of the week (and the fact that you can avoid Newark
, the only airport scoring lower than LAX on a recent survey). For those of us on the west coast, Houston is more practical than flying all the way to Newark (1.5 hours less air time). From New England, Newark would seem the logical connection unless one wanted/needed the extra air miles, wanted to avoid flying on a regional "mini jet", schedule wouldn't permit flying on the Newark flight days, or they really hated Newark.
Currently, both Continental flights from EWR and IAH depart on both Fri and Sat nights (~11:30PM) and arrive Sat and Sun early morning. IAH does have another flight departhing Sun night and arriving Mon morning, but I think it is seasonal. I thing that maybe one of the EWR flights is seasonal too. I too prefer IAH, mostly because of the potential weather implications this time of year at EWR.
I prefer to fly through IAH from Denver, but that flight cost over $180 more than going through EWR. So, I'm going through EWR. It won't be the first time I've used this route. EWR is slightly less flying time than IAH, but it's almost negligible. I can usually get much better connecting flights through IAH, but not $200 worth better.
I'm not sure if chauncy19 was asking about the difference between IAH and EWR red-eyes, or red-eyes in general versus the Delta daytime flights from JFK and ATL.
I can't get back from BON on Delta via either connection without a stay over somewhere, so I don't use Delta. And Delta is $200-$400 more for me (from Denver).
There is also Insel Air out of MIA, for a very reasonable price. Unfortunately, I can't get to MIA early enough to make that connection without a stay over. One night stay over can cost more than the savings.
If it worked for me, I like the Delta time schedule better. You don't fly all night. You probably can't dive the day of arrival, but you can dive most of the day before departure. On Continental, you can dive the day of arrival, but you can't dive at all the day before departure (and maintain 18-24 hours no-fly time). So, in the end, you have the same number of dive days. With Delta, you arrive in the afternoon, so usually no problems with check-in. You also depart in the afternoon, so no 3:00AM alarms to get to the airport and drop off the truck for the early Continental flights.
