Big Beach is adjacent to the tank. Big Beach was used for amphibious landing practice by the USMC during WWII for battle in the Pacific.
I can only guess how it got there.

I think the addition of the diffuser to the strobe helped a lot, especially on lighter colored specimens. I adjust every photo in PS7 which includes sharpening them up.
And like Dennis stated, good visibility helps.
