A little controling? Do you require that everyone you donate air to turn their back to you?

Then again as others here have stated, how many on them would not allow you to cradle them and control the ascent. And what kind of buddy just tells their dive buddy, "go to the surface if you run out of air on this dive since it is shallow."

Of course, I'm controlling. It's my gas and you're damn straight I'm controlling. I'm not blowing my stops and getting bent because some Darwin award winner needs my help.

I don't dive with people who run out of gas. And I'm sure not cradling some total stranger who must have beans for brains to run out of gas.

Despite the crazy antics of this thread, I actually did learn a thing or two (though that isn't too hard, being such a noob).
Then it was worth it.

Nudgeroni:
I certainly can see the reasoning behind the long hose for the primary reg and the short octo hose.
Backup, not octo.

Nudgeroni:
The most important thing I got out of this is that every diver should think through their approach to an OOA situation and how the equipment suits that approach.
And for this you get first prize.!

Meng_Tze:
you lost me with this response on readhead's. Seriously

In rescue there is the Tank cradle where you turn the diver back to you then grab ahold of the tank with your legs. Keeps full control of a diver. The only way to not be face to face and yank on a tank valve is to have the other diver turn their back to you. If that is the only way you would go with an OOa diver then I list that under a controlling nature.

And according to some of the replies here some of these guys wouldn't mind being in this position with redhead even when calm and a full tank. :rofl3:

Nudgeroni:
I also think that every diving approach (DIR included) has its weaknesses that must be weighed and managed.

What you need to think about are the concepts of bullet-proofing, idiot-proofing and risk assessment.

Yup, that's right. You suck my hose, guess what I am in control.....

Outside of total equipment failure (and we can argue equipment maintenance/dependency/redundancy in a different thread)... I agree. There is no need to just run out of gas.....

Got it: backup.

Oh, I see............ I don't cradle (have not had that training), I get on top of things and do my thing so to speak.

I usually have some deco obligation. I'm not going to risk my life coddling some freaked rec diver - and believe me, I'm very picky about what I put between my legs. ;)
