I purchased a MK2 from Scubatoys to use as a backup or pony reg and would like some recommendations for a 2nd stage for it.

I used the r395 for both MK2's

Just for a different idea, you could get a used metal case SP 2nd like the 109, have it rebuilt/upgraded to balanced adjustable.

this is a very good question and ne that I would enjoy to answer. First off I dive sp regs exclusively not because i believe that all other regs (aqualung, poseidon, zeagle, etc. ) are not fantastic regulators its just that when I started diving I was exposed to these regs and I liked them so I see no need to change.

The mk2+ first stage is a very solid workhorse regulator and I have personally dove with one to 130 feet in 30 degree water off the eastern coast of canada and have no problems with it (ote: I only use this reg for a deco bottle now- this decision was made because I bought 2 mk16's and a mk25).

Any of the scubapro 2nd stages will work fine for this 1st stage. what you have to look for next is the context you will be using the reg for. i assume you are not using it for deep tech diving as it is unlikely you would have chosen the mk2+ for that purpose. So if you are just using it for recreational diving I would suggest the r-190 it is essentially the same as the the r-390 but in a larger package. This reg works well at depth and I have never had a problem with it and I own 3 of them.

It has already been mentioned but it might be a good idea to buy a 109 locally or off of ebay and then have it serviced in your lds. I have a 109 that is about 20 years old and I use it as the primary on my doubles rig. I like it more than the s600 that I have on the left post of my doubles rig..

Thanks for all the good responses... I bought 2 MK2's not as primary but instead 1 for a backup and the other for a pony bottle. We (wife & son) currently have MK25/600 but have had problems in the past on vacations and a backup seemed like a good idea.

I hadn't even consided the 109 option but as luck would have it, I do have a recently rebuilt MK7 with a 109 (my first reg.) I might just use on one of them.

Thanks again for the inputs and if anyone knows of a good deal on R190's please post.

What is the difference between the R190, R290, R390? Also do they not have some that end in "5", such are a R295. I find Scubapro's numbering systems confusing.

Basically their are the same, Only the body is different, DA Aquamaster gave a really good answer to that very same question in one of the other threads, I'd post it but I don't know which thread it was in, If you do a search you should find it, If not dive him a pm.
