When I converted over to a DIR rig, I had some difficulty finding the D-ring for the SPG.

The reason was two fold. First, I just needed some practice. Second, my SPG hose was too long.

You might consider adjusting the length of your SPG hose to that the bolt snap and the D-ring intersect when you move the SPG back into position at your side. Doing so makes it easier to find the D-Ring and does not take away from your ability to see the gauge.

The back-up (octo) hose should be running OVER your shoulder, but should be on a realtively short (22-24") hose. The back-up necklace should also be relatively short so that the back-up is hanging just a little below your chin.

Large_Diver is correct, backup goes over the shoulder.

As for the SPG it needs two things, first, not too long, second it must run forward of the wing and down, not behind it.

I'm a little confused. How could it do that unless you brought it under the bottom of the wing?

My SPG hose runs on a relatively short hose over the top of my wing and under my left arm, where it clips to the D-ring. Is this correct?

Thanks.

I guess it depends how one is looking at it as to "in front of" or "over the top of".

Consider that one is in a horizontal position, face down with your wing fully inflated. Your hose would, if not clipped off, hang down below you, not be prevented from doing so by the wing.

I hope that makes sense.

I learned this the hard way. On one of my earlier dives with a hog rig I got my hose behind my wing and didn't notice it soon enough. On the bottom (260 fsw with double 104s and a 40 lb wing)the wing was well inflated to get me neutral and I was barely able to pull my SPG up far enough to see it because of the wing. Ever since I've been more careful.

Guys, thanks for the very informative thread on SPG routing!

I've been routing the hose straight down from the post, behind the wing, and either around the side of the wing (Pioneer) or under it and up (Explorer), and doing it all wrong, apparently.

This has been bugging me since I moved mine from the console, and I was almost ready to dust off the old retractor. Now I'm definitely looking forward to trying it the way it's meant to be.

:D

One other question: are the alternate reg and the LPI supposed to come up vertically from the posts, then loop over and cross an inch or two below the base of the diver's skull?

Or should they come down from the posts and cross below the base of the neck?

Yea, change the SPG routing immediately, the difference will amaze you :) Having it the other way is harzardous as I found out. With a full wing and the proper length hose, you can't pull it up enough to look at it easily.

As for the LPI and backup, I guess that depends on your first stage. On my setup (only doubles, both firsts are Apeks DS4), NOTHING comes up vertically, everything is somewhere between horizontal and down, leaning towards down.

In that case, I suspect mine is too long, since it can wrap around the lower edge of the Explorer wing.

Yet another thing to buy... sigh.

Guess you're using the short hose protectors, instead of the standard size ones?

Are your regs canted or horizontal? From the pics I've seen, Apeks are typically horizontal, and Scubapro are typically canted. Is that accurate?
