I've forgotten weights and had to use rocks too, glad that you had a good time.
 
Bins or bags are the way to go for sure.
Much easier to remember to grab 4-5 things than all 15-20 things especially at first.

I have all my dive gear in a mesh dive bag,
So I have to grab
1) tank(s)
2) gear bag
3) drysuit bag
4) weight in tool bag
5)save a dive tool box which also has my 151 local dive sites book in it in case our original site plan doesn't work out for whatever reason.

We have all our stuff in mesh dive bags except for our save a dive toolbox, weight bag, and a dry box we keep flashlights, computers, and compass in. So ideally we should just have to remember to grab 4 things... and then of course the dive flag for a shore dive, so then 5.

On this outing, long story short.. gear got separated the day before and the weight bag never made it to the staging area to go into the truck.
