Spoke to Apeks today. Apparently the current practice is NOT to install both the conical filter and the disc filter together.

For DIN applications, the conical filter should be used. For yoke apps, the disc filter should be used. However for a yoke config that is used with EANx, they recommend the conical filter be used.

Some of their US csutomers requested a 'filter guard' for yoke configs - as the lack of the disc filter was felt to be 'unsightly'. This is only in US service kits apparently.

So, now Im stuck with both filters installed. Apeks said that this could cause too much breathing resistance (though it tested, and feels fine..). I do use EANx from time to time, and I can't remove the disc filter without dissasembling the 1st stage (I think).

Hmmm. Cosmetics vs. reg performance. Interesting choice. Perhaps Apeks should have designed a stainless steel or chrome-plated brass disc "filter" that had very large holes in it. This could be installed on the exterior but really have no useful purpose beyond cosmetics.

If you have the proper tools, disassembling the yoke connector bolt is not a big deal. After taking it off, you would need to remove the cone filter and o-ring on the opposite side, insert a dowel from the opposite side, and push out the white disc on the near side. Not a big deal really. Re-assembly of the yoke connector bolt should be done with a torque wrench, however.

As long as reg performance is OK, I probably wouldn't mess with it. Just wait until the next overhaul or inspection and ask that the reg tech set up the reg in whichever way you prefer.

Thanks for sharing Apeks' response with us.
