Here, the comparison stops, because I could not make them meaningful within the spillage of each other, so . . .

So, for my $.02, which is more than it is worth:

I like the Intova Ultra Nova for clear, warm water open water diving, because the spot is bright enough and small enough to play it on your buddy's arm/hand and get his or her attention. It can be reduced to 30% for night diving, and the strobe feature is good for emergencies.

I definitely like the DRIS 1k Shorty for a backup light for caves, because it's almost as bright as the primaries, and will get you out quite easily in case of a primary failure. It'll fit a WHOLE lot better on my harness, too.

Can anybody shed some light on the differences between the shorty and the 1000. Brightness and burn time ect.

The Shorty is brighter, but will have a shorter burn time due to the smaller batteries. You do get a LOT smaller size, and an easy to replace and find AA battery design in the shorty as well. I'm a bit biased, but I think they are both really well built lights :D

I can definitely live with a shorter burn for the positives!

How will the Shorty work with some high output rechargeables? say 2400ma?

I dove the shorty against a 800 dive rite can light this week end in the blue grotto and devils den area of N Florida and the shorty light kicked butt i did a 48 min dive in the blue Grotto and then drove over and did a 71 min dive in the devils Den. the guide was using the $800 canlight and i used the shorty. the beam on my shorty was more focused and brighter than the can and I would say easily had twice the reach . This was not just my opinion the guide agreed that my light out shown his hands down

I was using Duracell rechargeable batteries and did not change the batteries between dives. the shorty kicked butt the first 48 min dive and continued to kick butt for the next 45 mins into the second dive and then it started to tire and the light output was tie for the last 32 mins of the second dive.

I was using rechargeable batteries and it was simply pound per pound dollar per dollar the best light in the cavern. My batteries cost 8 my light cost 100 so my completely rechargeable set cost about 1/8 the cost of its competition and I had the brightest light in there Had i changed my batteries during the surface interval I would have had the same punch for the entire two dives .

I would not be afraid of this light you can not go wrong. But using rechargeable batteries you always want a back up just to be safe. But then I always dive with redundancy anyway so that's no problem. I will be ordering my second shorty tomorrow so that my back up and my primary are the same

This thing is a FFOL, fist full of light! Wow.

There goes my trim!

I've dove my 1k shorty all week in my rebreather class. With the 00wabbit goodman handle, its really nice.. Outperformed my instructors 18w can light. I did notice the DRIS has a more yellowish light than my other lights. Heck of a backup light though. I used mine as a primary for my Mod 1 class, as I didnt want to deal with my can light yet for first dives on my Meg. With Energizer Lithiums its one hours and thats pretty much it in performance.

Sadly, my light has to go back, as there's a machining tolerance problem of some sort, as neither the Sanyo Eneloops, nor Tenergy 2500ma cells fit inside mine without tearing off the cells shrink wrap, and even with that, I'd never get the cells back out again.

I love my light. The sock, not so much. It is coming unstitched after one weekend of use
