Does a steel or aluminum Backplate scratch up steel tanks? I've never used a BP/W but I'm thinking about switching when my jacket fails. I have over 1G invested in Faber Blue Steels and don't want them scratched to hell. Does an STA have anything to do with it (help/hurt)?

Just wondering.... Thanks.

maybe if you don't use a wing.... actually, the cam band buckle, depending on its design is the potential damage point, as well as the bolt (if you use one) attaching the wing to the plate.. Face it, tanks will get scratched.....

BTW - looks like you need a few more tanks....

If you have a BP/W that does not require an STA, the backplate never touches the tank. The wing is between the two and the tank will not be scratched.

When you use an STA, the tank will sit right on it and possibly scratch it.

I am just now switching from a wing that did not require one to a wing that does require an STA. Most of my tanks are galvanized but I do have two painted ones so I guess I will find out if it scratches them.

My single tank adapter (DiveRite) has a rubber pad the cam bands thread through too, so there's no metal on metal contact. I have galvanized steel tanks (Worthington) and no scratches on my tanks after several years

Has anyone ever had dive equipment that didn't get scratched up and beat up over time? It's just the nature of the sport.

I use a DiveRite Wing too and cam bands for single tank use, no issues.

Duh...Yes I understand that. But I've dove with some commercial guys (non-commerical trip) and it looked like their tanks had been through hell and back. I'm not talking about minor scratches, I'm surprised they passed hydro. They use dive jackets BCD's but bought their tanks used. So not sure if damage came from them or was previous.

Either way, looks like my question was answered. Thanks Guys.

Ever take a look at cave divers tanks? Mine look like they have been dragged behind my truck for miles. This is why I prefer all 28 of my cylinders are galvanized.
