    PADI?

When I read comments like this, that start with someone criticizing PADI for the 'knees' approach, I have to chuckle, because I am always reminded of one of my favorite ads in a scuba magazine (from 2013): People, get real. Virtually every agency has good instructors, and virtually every...

    PADI?

TRUE! The cockier they are, the less I have any interest in being around them in the water. PADI dive training is every bit as good, or as bad, as the individual Instructor AND the individual student make it. I have worked with some very good divers certified by PADI, by NAUI, by SDI/TDI. I...

I need a new favorite dive shop.

I have used Dive Gear Express, Northeast Scuba Supply, Leisure Pro, Scuba Toys and Dive Right In Scuba as online vendors. I use each site for different types of purchases. And, I have been pleased with all of them. In terms of volume, I probably use DGX more than the others.

What is your Recommended online US Scuba Shop

I appreciate the feedback - I thought that as an outsider I was possibly missing something. 'We won't ' - that really sums it up. That is basically the message I kept hearing in the conversation I overheard - and I do think the guy's name was 'Aaron', at least that rings a bell. I couldn't...

What is your Recommended online US Scuba Shop

Interesting observation - what should determine the number of dive shops in an area? Why is 6 too many for Raleigh, and why would 2-3 be a better number? Why would that keep everyone happy? Why would everyone's business be better? Should the same apply to the number of online vendors? Why...

    Are hydros really necessary?

It has to do with the behavior of the OP. Like I said, maybe I misunderstand the concept of a 'dive professional', although I do see that term bandied about by a lot of instructors, as some kind of 'badge of honor'. But, maybe the term 'dive professional' is completely meaningless, maybe it is...

    Are hydros really necessary?

Wow, what a great response! I am sure that there were quite a few investors in one of Benrie Madoff's funds that said the same thing: 'I have figured out that this is a Ponzi scheme. But, if I can figure it out, so can anyone else, so I have no obligation to point anything out to anyone else...

Question: Routing of solo harness strap in back plate

What 'solo harness' are you referring to? Why would that make it become 'non-adjustable'? You just move the triglide / webbing keeper to adjust the shoulder strap length. A lot of divers use them on their plates to prevent the strap from creeping over time. No big deal to adjust them. If you...

First time diving doubles and sidemount.

Yep, here we have another of those highly informed and obviously objective comments from a very experienced diver, whose training background gives him first hand insight into what he is talking about.

    Incident during OW training

You may not have gotten to this point in the coverage of hand signals in your Confined Water training. But there is a universal u/w hand signal used to indicate that a piece of equipment is not functioning properly. All you have to do is point to the piece of equipment in question, and give...

Newly OW Certified and looking at gear packages!

Once again, you need to read. Did I say that? Did I suggest that? Did I mention 'backmount'? No, I didn't. Did I say it required a bp/w? No, I didn't. Oh, wow you are absolutely right! You didn't use those exact words. My apologies Instead, what you said was Obviously, a totally different...

Newly OW Certified and looking at gear packages!

Did you bother to read what he originally posted? Just in case you didn't, here's a reminder: It is really nice for us to be able to show off our extensive knowledge of all the available options, and promote our breath of expertise. But, the OP has already given some DETAILED information about...

Scuba gear stolen in Deerfield Beach Fl being sold on eBay

In May 2010, a trailer was broken into at the Extended Stay America location in Deerfield Beach FL, that contained a lot of scuba gear. Over $18000 worth of gear - tanks, drysuits, regulators, canister lights, backplates, wings - was stolen. The police (Broward County Sherriff's Office) were...

    Continuing education with IDC

Not necessarily overpaying, but it is hard to say without some additional detail. What is the 'advanced class', as the shop describes it? Does the $4000 include 'everything' - books? IE fee? Instructor Application fee? A more detailed breakdown from the shop might help you better determine...

Some thoughts on restructuring SCUBA training ...

This response is nonsensical. The fact, or presumption, that SB is facing a lawsuit is irrelevant as far as posting links to sites that offer 2 day OW certifications. Either the sites exist, in which case they can be posted, or they don't, in which case you are ... Why are you surprised? The...

    Cold at 78

Don't know, in her specific case, if it is as much a gender issue as an individual preference issue. When I started I was cold-proof - went diving with a 3 mm suit and a 3 mm core warmer, in 58 degree water, and was quite comfortable. Now, I don't dive wet if the water temp is below 73. If she...

    How common is this?

Very good point. The same is true in commercial aviation - people do it because they want to fly, not for the money, as you can tell when you talk to regional airline first officers, even left-seaters. As long as there are plenty of people who can afford to do it for fun, and are comfortable...
