Fish & Game Commission approves South Coast MPAs

This is an excellent point. Turtle and GSB increase has not been the result of MLPA's, it has resulted from a total ban on their take. Would the fishing community prefer this as a conservation strategy? Leave all areas open to fishing, but ban the take of rock fish, sheepshead, abalone, crab...

What watch do real divers wear?

MY step daughter gave me a $700 dollar Italian skin diving watch that doubles as a computer. I used it twice, then went back to the Casio G-Shock. I've been using those since they came out, this one is my third or forth.

Show some respect... bug hunters at Casino Point

Like divergal, I always thought the park was protected. I mean, it's a park, right!!! Here's a suggestion - why not get the City Fathers / Conservancy to post a "Please Don't Take" sign until the MLPA is in place. While not legally binding, it would at least let divers know the local ethos so...

Recomendations for San Diego Dive Shop

Where will you be staying. There are dive shops scattered all around San Diego, although we've lost a few due to the economy. House of Scuba is my current favorite (cause it's closest) House of Scuba - San Diego Scuba diving equipment, wetsuits, snorkel equipment, gifts and gear Divebums...

    Solo dives

When you dive solo you are your only resource in an emergency. The problem is, until you have experienced some sort of dive emergency, you don't know how you will respond. Its' easy to say "I know I won't panic", but in truth, nobody knows that until the have been there. I had over 500 dives...

Help Protect Southern California’s Ocean Gems

Dr. Bill, I can't make the meeting, but if you go speak up for us and support proposal 3, the "conservation plan" . Anyone who doubts the efficacy of MPA's has never dove at La Jolla Cove and seen the abundance of sea life there compared to the rest of the San Diego coast. I'm willing to give...

Shark sighting in Santa Monica Bay

This seems legitimate; the photographer was out there for shark research and there have been multiple sightings of sharks breeching in the area

    California Lobster Season Opening Report

I got 2 on a shore dive. Mobility was somewhat hampered by having only one fin. Visibility was really good, and I saw an octopus, guitarfish, and many other denizens of the deep. Also saw a blue seaweed that I don't recall seeing before. Looked sorta like leaf lettuce.

FINALLY doing Wreck Alley, where's the best place to stay in Mission Bay?!

No point in asking a local about hotels, we never use them. Restaurants, though, we know about. What kind of food do you like. PB has good sushi, tapas, Thai, Italian, Cajun, burgers, seafood, even Peruvian. (no Ethiopian that I know of, you have to go to UH for that)

    In Water Recompression?

I'm skeptical. 100 feet down is a lousy place to lose consciousness.

"There are no silly questions"...except for this one. Actually, DAN has an article DAN Divers Alert Network that says "don't worry, be happy".

    Coordinates for the Lazy Days

This might be a little late but : 32deg 44'00'N 117deg 16'20'W PS: the mooring line is below the surface, so you may have to rely on the numbers alone. Look for a bottom contour which goes from 75 ft. dropping sharply to 90 ft. Part of the wreck is on the top and the rest on the bottom. I...

3 mil wetsuit or shorty is good; although you can go without a wetsuit for a while in the summer.

    San Diego diving

Diving in the Cove is pretty shallow until you get out by the 1st buoy, where it hits about 30 FSW, depending on the tide. That said, if the viz is good it's a very pretty dive, lots of fish, lobster, etc. to see. You might even see a Giant Sea Bass or two. It's a great place to snorkle as...

The doctor, after an examination, sighed and said, 'I've got some bad news. You have cancer, and you'd best put your affairs in order.' 100% solo diving, in new location

In the advanced forum, you said that the local shops and others dive this lake. Why not arrange to tag along for a few dives before going solo? If your living there, it will still be there when your ready. Get a redundant air supply. Being able to breathe makes all the difference in the...
