NAUI ice diving standards - questions

In your drink? Is NAUI still using Lee Sommers' book? Back in the 70's I was teaching Ice Diving under the YMCA banner, using this book because it was the only ice diving manual available. It was hopelessly out of date at that time.

How deep can you dive safely

Diving is not "safe." Nothing is; there are only varying degrees of risk. If you have to ask whether or not something is safe, perhaps you have not done the necessary risk assessment, or perhaps you are ignorant of what you need to know to do the risk assessment. Either way, no one else can...

Dry suit hose free flows air when not connected to suit

I never go anywhere without my Swiss army knife.

    Pool Session Incident

The symptoms you describe point to a likely case of mediastinal emphysema, air in the space around the heart. As long as you did not also suffer an air embolism, your chances of recovery without additional problems are good. You should not dive untill fully recovered and you should be further...

    We love PWC's

I posted this in the Boats and Boating forum, but I think the meaning escaped them. What do you think? You may like this story. Last week I was on my boat in Kenosha's South Port Marina. The entrance to the marina is quite narrow and there is shoal water (less than 5 feet) on each side. My...

    We love PWC's

You may like this story. Last week I was on my boat in Kenosha's South Port Marina. The entrance to the marina is quite narrow and there is shoal water (less than 5 feet) on each side. My attention was attracted by an extraordinarily loud boat horn being repeatedly sounded. I looked over...

    Compressor Hours

I have a bit over 3200 hours on my Bauer Capitano right now. I have had it apart a few times but it's still going strong.

Where were you first introduced to the Back Kick?

I have no idea when I learned to do a "helicopter" or a back kick. I know that when I first saw some of the tech agencies promoting their instruction that included these techniques I realised that I was already doing them. I never was taught to do them, they were just naturally developed...

    Weighting your flag

I have about 4500 lbs of lead in the keel. I find that that does a nice job of keeping the mast upright while we are moored for diving.

    leaking first stage

Do you mean to say that you are planning to dive with a regulator that is obviously defective? The only regulator that I am aware of that "leaks" from the first stage under normal contitions is Sherwood. Your regulator needs repair before it is used.

    Custom wetsuits

I understand your desire to have a good fitting exposure suit for a cheap price. No dive will be enjoyable if you are not reasonably warm and comefortable. Most off-the-rack suits seem to be made for idealized figures. Barbie and Ken come to mind. Unfortunately, about 80% of the population...

Best ship wreck, real not artificial.

Pirate ships and galleons are quite different vessels. Galleons were HUGE (for the time) cargo carriers. Pirate vessels were small, fast attack boats very much like the pirate vessels off of Somalia today. A typical pirate vessel was likely to be a two masted sailing vessel rigged...

    Ice Diving Emergencies

You are overthinking this. The 4 standard singnals are enough for recreational under ice diving. If you are engaged in a complicated mission such as search or salvage, then you might need to agree on a more complicated communication protocol, or, preferably, use a voice link. The emergencies...

Trigger snap instead of bolt snap

I use trigger snaps on my back-up lights because they are significantly shorter than bolt snaps and, therefore, allow the light to fit better against my sholder strap. I also use them topside on my flag halyards because they fit into the flag grommets better.

    Hanging bottles underwater

The hose is a green welding gas hose and it is connected to a welding regulator mounted to an oxygen storage bottle in the foreward compartment of the boat. The hose runs through an old hawse pipe which is no longer used for the anchor line. I installed a new hawse pipe when I put an electric...

    Hanging bottles underwater

I always drop an oxygen hose over the bow with two second stages hanging at 20 feet.

    Rinsing

When I can drink the water I am diving in (which is most of the time) I don't rinse my gear. When I dive in the salty stuff, then I rinse.

    Water Retention?

It is more likely that you are just more comfortable and relaxed in the water. The biggest problem that most divers have when they first start is that they are nervous. They do not get all the air out of their BC's. They tend to hold a large amount of air in their lungs. They also tend to...

    Labor Day Weekend in Milwaukee

Over the comming 3-day Labor Day Weekend I will be in Milwaukee with my boat, Enterprise. We will be diving the Willie, the car-ferry Milwaukee, Dredge No. 6 and other popular shipwrecks. Many spots are still open. There is some great diving off of Milwaukee. Let me know if you want to get wet.
