It appears that Ikelite is NOT going to be making a housing for it. I doubt that Nikon will since it is designed as a waterproof camera already...not looking very promising unless Fantasea does one. Fantasea does house a lot of the smaller Nikon digicams, I would suggest contacting them.
The concept and quality of the cameras are pretty good. The only issue we have seen is that its very hard for someone to keep their head focused and not moving around throughout the video. Being on snorkel makes it even harder than on scuba. Have you looked at/considered the GoPro Hero2?
One of the local Sony reps was telling us they will definitely be coming out with dedicated macro lenses in 2012, and there is a new line up of Zeiss lenses getting ready to ship for the NEX series cameras. They are of course as much, or more than the cameras themselves!
We certainly have some experience with these models. They are VERY different from each other. What are you looking to shoot? Is this personal or professional? There is quite a big difference in housing cost, camera cost and size.
Definitely the Tokina route. You will be very happy with it, extremely sharp behind the dome, and if you want to explore CFWA, the Tokina with a mini-dome is tons of fun!
Underwater housings really do not require a lot of maintenance. For an Equinox housing, your maintenance will be the main O-ring on the back of the housing, anytime you open it. It takes little to no time for that maintenance. For the Orings on the controls, those are done by the manufacturer...
Hahaha, that is definitely the first time I have heard such a story. Every year out here they do the Avalon Underwater Clean up at Catalina Island, they find some very interesting items, but I've never heard of something like this!
Hi Bugeye:
it's always good to see people enjoying their new camera systems.
You mention a strobe for movies. Strobes are designed to flash for split second intervals when the camera's internal flash fires while taking still images. If you are looking for lighting while shooting HD Video on...
I would suggest going with the new Go Pro Hero2 and either the eye of mine housing, or just the flat lens replacement for the GoPro housing. We are working on bringing in a glass front element for the housings which will be another great option.
Investing in the right system will definitely give you years of enjoyment...and at the end of the day stretching the budget a bit at the beginning will make you happier long term, especially once you learn to use all of the camera features and ergonomics become a noticeable thing. Not to...
Mark definitely started to hit the nail on the head. As good as many of the smaller cameras are today, they still do not compare to a DSLR, especially a Canon 7D. When you look at many of the smaller cameras, even 4/3 cameras from Olympus, Panasonic and Sony, they take excellent images however...
