How to clean an old aluminum can?

I thought about vinigar, but it doesn't really have any coral/crust type growth on it, most seems like plain old algae/slime and I was worried that the vinigar would cause corrosion. I think I will start out with a good freshwater rinse and then a mild soap and warm water and see what that...

How to clean an old aluminum can?

I found an old Pepsi can on a dive last night. It is aluminum, but the top has no pop-top or pull-tab, you can see where it was punched open with a can opener. I'm guessing that puts it at about 50 years old or so? Overall, it seems to be in good shape and the markings are faded, but legible...

Eel Attack in Cozumel (The Feeding of Lionfish)

I can assure you that taking lionfish home to eat is more problematic than killing them and leaving them. I have been rushed by eels three times here in Cuba and each time it was because I had some fish on a stringer, mostly lionfish. I never got bit though one did chase me 15 feet vertical from...

    GoPro Death Mount

Well, I have recently switched to a bigger gun and a slightly different mount, but the angle on this mount shown above compared to the original was basically identical. I have a couple up on YouTube and one of a triggerfish shot with the new larger gun.

    I finally got a sighting!

I had an exciting weekend. After seeing a handfull of nurse sharks here and there and geting close to a couple, I was on a dive this weekend and as I swam over a coral head, there in the sand below me was an eight or nine-foot long Bull Shark. I tapped my buddy on the shoulder and pointed...

    Lionfish ceviche.....mmmmmm

I don't think the ciguatera issue with parrotfish is that they directly eat the algae that grows on the reef and ingest the ciguatera bacteria that way. The triggers probably build it up by eating the crustaceans and such that live on the reef. Not sure though. :dontknow:

    Things you've found under water

Got out yesterday morning for a quick dive and picked up a Coca Cola hobble skirt bottle with 'CUBA' on the bottom. If I'm reading the marking I found on the side correctly, the bottle was made in Sept. of 1941. The bottle was very clean and is in exellent shape. I'll post some pics soon.

    Scuba in Cuba

Here on the Southern end of Cuba, the water temps have been hovering at 79F even down to 90+ feet, although there were a couple 77F dives a while back. I chill fairly easily and a 3mm sleeveless shortie and .5mm full suit are keeping me warm even through 3 dives this past Sat.

My personal fin shootout - X-stream, Slingshot and Seawing Nova

I don't have any personal expierience with this, but I would think if they did discolor so quickly it would be more of an issue with something discoloring the plastic than the plastic just fading. Is there freshwater diving in your area with iron or tannins in the water - usually red/brown...

My personal fin shootout - X-stream, Slingshot and Seawing Nova

No, you asked what the general consensus was and I was just making a joke about how there is always disagreement about everything here. Not that it is a bad thing, it gives a good range of perspective, but it is entertaining to read some of the debates. My comment had nothing to do with...

    Invasion of Cuba

Yeah, Tropical Storm Nicole came through here at the end of September and tore Phillips up pretty good, but it opened again a couple weeks ago. +6 on my tally today!

    Invasion of Cuba

Well, the slot has been pretty clear lately. The numbers are coming down at Philips again after it was closed for a couple months, but Glass and Ferry Landing are loaded, same with the leeward. I killed 10 in one dive on the leeward last weekend, got two more dives over there this weekend so...

    Invasion of Cuba

I have been fighting off these invaders from Southern Cuba for a few months now and have about 200 kills under my belt. Does that make me a lionfish ace? :D

Exposure suit reccomendations for VA Beach/Moorhead NC area

Thanks all for the info, diving dry just isn't in the budget right now, especially considering we'd have to buy two. So, it looks like a couple of good 7mm wetsuits for now and if we find ourselves getting good use out of them, then going dry would probably be a good long-term investment for us...

    Deepest you've ever been?

Only when you let it drive you. Achieving greater depth (to a point) is a natural byproduct of improving your freedive skills. In some ways, it can be used as a rough indicator of ability, although not absolute. It is only when a person lets depth become their overarching goal that it becomes a...

    Deepest you've ever been?

I made it down to 62 FSW this past weekend, but didn't get much bottom time don there. The total dive was just over a minute. I'd like to keep improving on this a bit too.

Lionfish rules and regulations in Florida

NOAA has officially listed them as an invasive species so it is open season on them in US waters. Of course Marine parks/preserves and other areas that have their own regulations restricting fishing or spearing may now allow it in certain areas. NOAA Eat Lionfish Campaign NOAA Lionfish...
