Comparison - Shearwater Petrel, Perdix, and Teric

I am thinking about new Shearwater computer, air integrated. I am an experienced open water diver, nitrox but nothing more exotic. No tec, rebreather, no trimix. What would be the advantages of a Perdix, Petrel, or Teric? I’m old enough to need readers, do a big clear display is a plus. Thanks...

Question How old are you and how long certified? Poll- please take part!

67, certified for 25 years. Been diving regularly (if not always frequently), other than the year I got married (just a little too busy). Even managed some diving in 2020 (a week before everything shut down) and 2021 (driving up to the Straits of Mackinac).

    Bohemia Oscura

It was hard to find Sol for a while. I don’t know if there have been production issues or things just aren’t making it to the island. The shelves generally seem to be well-stocked, except for the odd shortage. I have found some more interesting beers at Mega, including some decent IPAs.

100 or 120cf tanks in Coz?

Aldora has HP steel 100s and 120s. I aspire to be able to use a 100. I’m getting close, but there’s always that one dive I make it back with just barely 700 and lose the confidence. Lately, they’ve been getting some 117s. Really nice tanks. A lot shorter than the 120s with a neglible difference...

    Cozumel questions

Lots of places don’t take credit cards, so you’ll want pesos. They will probably take USD, but not at a good exchange rate. At the fancier restaurants that take cards, it depend on you card. Do they charge foreign transaction fees? Exchange rates on cards are usually pretty good, but make sure...

Any tips on how to get on dive boat with people of same skill level?

Actually, sharing air with a diver low on air is standard for Aldora. The purpose is to avoid cutting the dive short, because Aldora does have the policy that the entire group has to surface together. Air-sharing really only works when one diver is lower on air than the others. When a second...

Can your wife teach classes at a Divi resort? That would being Bonaire into play, which is great diving. If you want a comparison of St Lucia diving and Cozumel diving, here’s what I can tell you based on one trip to St Lucia and over 20 trips to Cozumel. Visibility isn’t nearly as good at St...

Any tips on how to get on dive boat with people of same skill level?

This has already been said, but let me chime in. It’s hard to imagine how you could avoid getting new or unskilled divers with an operation that only has one boat. They need to make money and fill the available seats. If they have more than one boat, statistically, you have a better chance. The...

    Long weekend hotel recommendations

No good breakfast options close by. All rooms at the Villa have at least a fridge, coffee maker, and microwave, so you can manage breakfast in your room and keep some cold beer on hand, maybe some lunch meat for lunch sandwiches. Some of the rooms have full kitchens. Aldora’s pickup time is...

    Cozumel Restaurant List

Are you sure that’s El Pique? El Pique is a taqueria and I’ve never seen fish there. It doesn’t open until 6 or 7. Were you at La Perlita, maybe? That’s a seafood place and would be open at 4:30 or 5:00.

    Found - Suunto D6i

I wondered whether it was really lost, or just tossed overboard in frustration. I wasn’t really tempted to keep it. It wouldn’t play nicely with my other computers.

No, I was able to see the first logbook entry. I didn’t try to go any further.

I found a Suunto D6i, black with silicone strap, at end of Cedral/beginning of Santa Rosa. Last logbook entry March 4, 2023. Found March 13, 2023. Message me if you think it’s yours.

Travel Time - Cancun Airport to Ferry in Playa del Carmen

I also fly a lot. Some of my preference is airline-based. I strongly prefer Delta, partly because I have status and I can use miles for seats up front. Even if I’m paying for the ticket, in my book Delta is better than American or United. I’ve had a bad experience taking America to CZM through...

Travel Time - Cancun Airport to Ferry in Playa del Carmen

Unfortunately, direct to Cozumel is no longer an option for us. I would rather do the bag drag than change planes in Chicago, Dallas, or Miami. I’ve been paying for the convenience of a private transfer. Canada Transfers has been good. I took the ADO bus once, but wasn’t interested after COVID.

Travel Time - Cancun Airport to Ferry in Playa del Carmen

Thanks for the info. I did the bag drag twice in 2022 and did not run into these issues. Bags were pretty prompt and the pickup was fine. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Fortunately, the timing is pretty flexible for me. I can always catch a later ferry.

Travel Time - Cancun Airport to Ferry in Playa del Carmen

Has anyone who’s recently made the trip between the Cancun airport and the ferry in Playa report on how long it took? I know there has been som construction and bad traffic, but in October, it wasn’t to bad, maybe 90 minutes.

    Exchange rate, etc.

That’s possible and would explain what happened, but that’s not how I remember it. Schwab covers the fees, so I don’t have any reason to decline the fees. I suppose I could have been really confused. After three or four different banks, I was frustrated enough to be really confused. I’ll have to...

    Exchange rate, etc.

Schwab has been great, but I had issues with the ATM exchange rate gimmick in October. Every time I declined the offered rate, the ATM was unable to process the transaction. I tried every bank I could find - Santander, USBC, Scotia, and more I can’t remember now. Maybe I was doing something...
