    Quick question on DIN conversion

I was in graduate school when VW Beetles were everywhere. I made extra money by tuning up and doing light repairs on VWs for students whose automotive ability ended with filling the gas tank.

    Quick question on DIN conversion

Still, you could have used the O ring that came as part of the regulator. Either way, one becomes an extra. Part of the problem is that Scubapro does not include much in the way of instructions with anything they sell, expecting consumers to seek the technical assistance of a SP dealer for...

    Quick question on DIN conversion

I understand your point, but the point I was making is that both O rings packaged with the Din kit are superfluous if you use the O ring that comes as part of the Mk 19 when you install the Din fitting ON A MK 19. Since there are two identical O rings, one already in the Mk19 and one with the...

    Quick question on DIN conversion

Hi Angelo. Not that many of us Mk V users left. My Mk 5 does not use the 'universal' Din fitting. It takes the Din fitting designed by SP exclusively for Mk 5 regulators, so no washer needed. This discussion was focused on Mk 19 conversions, so mentioning the washer needed for M5s may be...

    Quick question on DIN conversion

Correct. No second O ring belongs in this assembly. You wind up with a second O ring because you bought two separate items, each with an identical O ring: the DIN kit and the regulator itself. These were two separate and distinct items. Trying to somehow fit the extra ring is not a good idea. I...

    Quick question on DIN conversion

It's not included as a spare. The regulator comes with its own O ring, as does the DIN kit. Two separate items, really not designed to be used together in this switching Din to yoke and back again manner. The reg needs only one O ring, of course, so you wind up with a spare, but that was not the...

    Quick question on DIN conversion

I did the Mk 19 conversion from yoke to DIN this past summer, and have used the reg in its original configuration and extensively with its DIN configuration. The O ring that came with the DIN kit is simply an extra. I'll be converting back to yoke when I travel to Dominica this winter. Very easy.

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

Read with more diligence. I wrote that divers who rely (note: 'rely') on other people to help them if they get in trouble are fools. If circumstances limit a person's ability to gain substantial experience, then that should be factored into what they attempt to do. Training is a great help, I'm...

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

I've been diving for more than 50 years, and have dived solo for most of those years, solo exclusively for the first two years that I dived back in the 60s. When I finally got certified in 1972 buddy diving was like a religious article. I tried it, didn't much like it. When I'm paired with a...

    Backup regulators on dive trips?

I can't imagine taking a back up regulator when I fly south to the Caribbean. Regulators are pretty tough and not likely to get lost. The only back up I carry on the plane is a second mask, along with small things like o rings, mouthpiece, etc. In many dozens of such trips I've never had any...

    Push Notifications

War? What war? I acknowledged the extreme fear of entering the water that Turniptop helpfully pointed out. This realization doth help me deal with this fear. I understand that these extraneous exchanges may clog up the thread, so there will be nothing further. You can't turn off those...

I guess it was silly of me not to realize that the word 'doth' is part of your everyday vocabulary. How wonderful it was that you came up with a sentence, all on your own, that so closely resembled something written by the bard of Avon.

    Push Notifications

'The lady doth protest too much, methinks', is the proper word order of Hamlet's observation. The folks back home must be beaming with pride at your literary accomplishments. But you are correct. Even now, after decades of diving, they have to forcefully pry my fingers off the railing and toss...

    Push Notifications

Another thing: In over 50 years of scuba diving I've never had anyone encourage me to enter the water. I think these kind of 'hesitations' occur mostly with inadequately experienced advanced open water certificationeers who still are a bit afraid, usually because they have been inadequately...

    Push Notifications

I prefer to get most notifications via mail delivery. Real mail, the kind that comes with a stamp and is delivered to the mailbox near my front door. When someone replies directly to a post I made, that little bell sign is entirely adequate. Otherwise, I prefer not to be troubled with...

    Push Notifications

What is a push notification? I'm unaware of anybody/anything pushing on me. In any case I've got excellent balance. Can Scubaboard somehow detect a malefactor attempting to push me?

    What do you drive?

Older Toyota Tacoma, 5 speed manual transmission, 4 WD, base model with roll up windows, room for two persons only, no frills other than an excellent A/C and an audiophile tape deck. A locking cap and provisions for hauling gear and cylinders. Also used for exploring sandy roads in Pine...

How to answer "what is your highest certification level"?

Cave diving, rebreathers, mixed gasses, highly technical diving of any sort require training, without doubt. Possibly an exam as well. Ordinary sport diving not so much, though I must admit that many of the newly and not so newly certified divers I encounter on head boats are sadly deficient in...

How to answer "what is your highest certification level"?

Based on my personal experience and observation during nearly 60 years of Scuba diving it seems the more cards a person has the poorer their diving abilities. All agencies are comprised of self-appointed 'experts'. Who certified the first certifiers? I have only basic certification, enough to...

    Mask for big faces

I need a very large mask, and have found the Tusa Freedom HD by far the best. It seals perfectly with wonderfully soft silicone, and is well designed. It took a long time to find this mask, and its predecessor, the Tusa Visualator. I tried at least a dozen masks before finding these masks, with...
