A lot of yall are saying all this **** doesn't happen anymore. I'm not regurgitating **** I've heard, I am telling you what my first hand experience has been.

It's quite possible we are losing something via interpretation but I am certainly not trying to be deceptive.

I'm not saying they don't have computers, I am saying they don't use them. I have seen several uwatec timers still in action and espoused as the way to go.

I will admit that when traveling my experiences have been much more in line with the descriptions here. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think my local group is an outlier.

People are weird. I am telling you first hand that in my high level gue classes I have used computers. Computers are REQUIRED for the ccr class. WKPP is using computers.

Maybe your weird scuba friends don’t, but this is not the way. There have always been GUE arms straight out like an airplane, s drill doing, line laying in open water wackos that will tell you all kinds of things. That doesn’t mean that’s what GUE is telling them to do.

I call em “valve turners”.

Okay, I have to ask, you mean you guys don't do the s drill...like everytime? Let me guess you skip GUE EDGE too?

:rofl3:

Dude I was on a boat in the summer geared up wearing a drysuit (which is in and of itself dumb af) ****** ROASTING. Sous vide sweatin in a trash bag and one of the folks wanted to do a GUE EDGE.

I was not entertained.

Lol I believe if you showed up to a dive down here and tried to pull that **** you would no longer get invited to dive

I also see instructors doing industry mandated bad things like multiple bounce ascents. Is GUE the answer? I really haven't seen their classes, so I can't answer that.

Maybe I missed it in the standards but where does the industry mandate multiple bounce ascents? I have never been mandated to do anything even remotely similar to that.

Most divers might stick with the same instructor but you do not have to. I prefer diverse backgrounds and diving environments.

I actually encourage my students and my friends to take courses from different instructors. I probably need to follow my own advice as most of my courses have been taught by the same 3 or 4 people. At least it wasn't the same instructor for all of them.
The perceived wisdom tends to stick with an instructor through your career as far as possible. Sure, having variety may work, but consistency and teaching style counts very highly for many people.

I highly disagree with this. I prefer to learn from different people if I can. As stated above, I even tell my students that. I have some repeat customers. Some of them come back specifically to do SM with me as it is what I specialize in. Some come back , and this sounds ego driven but it is not, because of me. They "click with me and my personality" and like my teaching style as well as the high bar I set.

I also encourage people to try different gear configs. Same thing...see what fits you and expand your knowledge around what is out there. In my OWC, I dive SM for the final dives so I can introduce my students to something different. I take them into the dive center and show them a rebreather and explain what they are and how they differ from open circuit (which is in the training materials but I find a hands and eyes on conversation works better) I also dive SM on all guided dives I do. Some have seen it, some are shocked by it. Most want to learn it after seeing me in the water in that config for a few dives.

Exactly the reason I check out what GUE is up to even though I will never take a GUE course. To expand my knowledge and be able to answer possible questions that may arise from students, guests diving with me or my friends in other countries who come to me.

During my DMC and IDC I was told that people will see you as an expert. This hit me hard and I have never forgotten it. I may suffer from a pretty severe case of imposter's syndrome but due to that statement that was told to me many times, I have spent countless hours learning. When I am not diving, I am reading about diving or watching videos on diving.

I crave knowledge.

Knowledge is power

You can’t really “check out what gue is up to” without taking a course. And if you haven’t taken a course you shouldn’t really be answering questions about it, it just perpetuates all this nonsense. You can see in this thread just how many people who fancy themselves experts don’t really know what they’re talking about.

Ideally you shouldn’t pipe up about gue until you’ve taken at minimum a cave 1 or tech 1 course IMO

This is a ridiculous take. I can read the GUE blogs, I can talk to GUE instructors and dive with them (which I have on many occasions). And for the record, I will speak about whatever I want. I do not take my role lightly and do not pass on bad info.

You seem to think that I would speak negatively about GUE. You are making an assumption based on zero facts. But now we have the "don't talk about GUE unless you are GUE" line of thought. 🙄

Oh and wasn't this thread exactly about why people check out GUE but don't take courses? Maybe you should tell the OP that no one can "check out GUE unless they take a course" which means this 96 page thread is useless.

Speak negatively about gue if u wanna. Idgaf. I have no skin in the game. Im done giving GUE my money. As long as you realize you just don’t know what you’re talking about if you don’t have any experience with it. Reading this thread you can see that is the case with most of these people.

Yes this 96 page thread is useless.
