The action belies the true essence of the slow relaxing sport that scuba diving is.
One problem with filming long scuba diving swimming scenes realistically is the lack of communications between the divers or between the divers and the crew on the boat. This can be overcome by full face masks with communication. Otherwise, the underwater scenes will need to be narrated. Wait. Hold on. Let's cut over to a movie being shown at a theater already in progress.

The diver has just arrived at his first decompression stop after making a slow ascent. Wait. Wait for it. He.......He's.......He's, checking his dive computer. Zzzzzzzzzz. It appears the diver is........is........is doing absolutely NOTHING. Zzzzzzzzz. Zzzzzzzzz.

After the movie some of the viewers were being interviewed. Sir, what did you think of the movie? "It was great! I loved it! I got the best sleep I've had in weeks. Is there going to be a sequel?"

Too much realism in a scuba diving movie is going to make viewing bingo seem like an action-packed thriller. There is one category where watching a movie of diving will be exciting. It's a movie of yourself being filmed by your buddy. Through the movie you can relive the experience. It's value to other viewers is questionable however. I've seen enough videos on SB and youtube to be convinced that unless there is some educational value in it for me, after 10 minutes I'm ready to move on.

The excitement in scuba diving is in the personal experience and not in the viewing of it.

These movies are now in their own category of Shark Camp...blame lays at the feet of Steven Spielberg...but admittedly I love them all. Its a guilty pleasure. So far removed from reality I just chuckle the whole time. Jaws, The Shallows, 47 Meters, Sharknado, Deep Blue Sea. The list is growing every year now, seems like.
The Shallows had... redeeming value.

This is a JOKE, I do NOT recommend that you dive to 47 meters in a Great White infested cave with a single AL80 and no fins.
Luckily you said it was a joke... At the beginning I was thinking of doing it! There are so many great white shark infested caves around the world :D

Can't remember the name of the movie, but I think I saw it on Netflix a while ago. It was about a group of cave divers. They were actually talking to each other with standard 2nd stages in their mouths. 😵‍💫

I am good, I have fins.

Which is why the director of 47 Meters Down had to put their two hapless female DSD participants in full face masks. The movie would have just been too ridiculous if they had dialogue with conventional regulators in their mouths.

You can't be too careful. There certainly have been irresponsible divers diving in shark infested caves. (See Jacques Cousteau and the Sleeping Sharks of the Yucatan.)

Caves infested sharks are real 😳

If you show up to the dock for a shark cage dive and the boat and cage look like they haven’t been serviced since the Kennedy administration, are you REALLY going to get on the boat?

Do you REALLY think those cylinders and regulators have been serviced recently?

Realistic events given those circumstances would have been them passing out from bad gas before the cable even broke, lol.
