I'm lucky to live in the region with several budget airlines connecting my home airport with the main hubs. I honestly can and usually do wait until the absolute last minute to book anyway, so hopefully if anything changes I'll be informed. And even if I have to lose any money, it won't be a heartbreak.

We do the same thing when in SEA. After landing and getting oriented, we head to the ticket counters and see what's cheap. That and not booking hotels before-hand has been the best way to travel for us.

The good old days is gone when it comes to visiting Thailand. You will need at least 2 weeks ahead of departure time to get the Thailand Pass QR code. Plus a slew of other requirements (SHA+ booking confirmation, prepaid swab test appointment documents, travel insurance document, …) which take time to collect the “right” (i.e., acceptable) documents. If they don’t like your submitted documents, you won’t get the QR code in time as you need to re-submit the “right” documents.

Good luck!

Nothing is ideal in reality.
You have to report back to the hotel every night during the initial qualifying period. 2N Lob is only possible after you have been cleared to depart from Phuket.
You have to confirm with the Sand Box regulation because I believe it is for 7 nights. Check it out.
I believe that's for sandbox ( 7 nights, which is the scheme @Dan is doing) and not test & go (only nights 1 & 5, this scheme is restarted on Feb 1), but thanks for the reminder, I'll double check with my SHA+ hotel.

BKK is huge and so is the infection.

Just booked my flight for Feb 13 to HKT and deposited for the Feb 18-25 trip on the Andaman. I'm thinking of flying to Male on Feb 27 and do some local diving, not LOB. Where can I do that on dirt cheap budget? Absolutely cannot afford resort diving.

Diving from Male is very ordinary. What is the attraction in that tiny city/town?
Dirt cheap budget? Thailand is the winner.
Have a nice trip.

I don't plan on staying in Male. I can take the speed boat and/or public ferry. The HKT--MLE flight arrives around 8:30PM. There's a speed boat to Guraidhoo at 9:30PM, for example. Diving costs around $40++, cheapest accom $30-40. Then it's possible to island hop to N/S Ari Atoll or Vaavu Atoll by combining ferry and speed boat. I think I can spend 1-2 weeks there.

Alternately, if more budget flights will be added between Thailand and the Philippines, that would be a nice option too. At the moment it's cheaper to fly to Male than Manila.

When you are in Male, don’t miss the dive site called “Fish Factory” or Kanduoiy Giri.

Philippines is soon to be opened to fully vaccinated with no string attached(kind of).
