Read up on "direct" vs "indirect" compasses-you may find some value there. I've heard the direct reading Suunto A-10 orienteering compass will work fine under water, so if you're used to using that sort already, why not give it a try.

BTW I think I have a very nice Scubapro FS2 in a cute pink console with an SPG (metric) available if you're interested.
