hello all! me and a few friends have all recently started diving and are about to go on our first real dive trip in which we will be bringing our own gear and we didnt know if it was a normal thing to bring our weights..... i know they are heavy but my bag will still be under the 50lbs for the plane and dont want to get stuck with hard weights.. am i thinking to much into it? will we be the weird ones pulling our own weights out of our bags or is it a pretty normal thing to do? anyways thanks for any advice :)

Tanks and weights are usually rented together and part of the price the dive centers charge you for the dives.
I see no reason to take your weights with you - unless you want a workout out of hauling the luggage.

you can leave them at home. i assume you use the soft lead shot bags ? hard lead ain't so bad. :)

gonna have to burn off those mai tai's somehow :)

yeah i use the soft hard lead is bad when you need a million lbs of it haha

if you use a lot of lead and it is tough to find where to put it all, you should consider asking for a steel tank instead of allum

It won't be weird. Most people won't be paying attention to you....they'll be taking care of their own setup. That said, I wouldn't travel with your own weights. There's really no need to do so as most places include weights with your dive. I've only seen the pellet weights at a couple of places, but hard weights do the trick. How much are you carrying? I typically use 14 lbs in salt, but I can squash at least 24 lbs in my BCs weight pockets and another 10-12 in my tank trim pockets. (I wear a back inflate BCD and don't have extra pockets.) Of course, the choice is yours. One reason I don't bring weights is that between me and my husband that would be a lot of extra weight to haul when traveling. It's OK getting to the airport, but traveling (especially internationally) can mean a long bag drag to get to your transport or to your hotel/condo/resort.

I take my ankle weights as they are not generally available, but use the dive shops lead for the rest (floaty feet).
