Four of us are scheduled to go to Coz in a couple weeks. I have been monitoring the coronavirus rates over the past month and they still seem to be increasing. All four of us are vaccinated, so our health concerns are reduced, but I worry about what restaurants are open, mask rules, etc. We always stay in town and go to the local restaurants, try to go to the plaza on Sunday, etc.

Also worried that they could go to "red" status while we are there, which I guess would really limit activities.. The bookings can be cancelled with no penalty, so there is no economic issue, but I would rather go if current or likely conditions would not make for a sucky trip.

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to get information online, but I am not finding much that helps.

Can anyone provide info on what is open/closed currently, other restrictions, etc? Also, for anyone in the know, is there much talk about the "stoplight" going from orange to red, or is it one of those "anyone's guess" kind of things?

I was just down there June 8-17.

Restaurants... the only ones that are closed are the ones that went out of business.

Mask Rules... we saw a few government employees (volunteers??) holding signs, and encouraging people to wear a mask. I saw quite a few locals without masks on, and most tourists didn't wear a mask.

As far as the area going to red... IMO, I doubt it. Their vaccine rate is increasing, and they can't afford to lose the small influx of tourism that has started to return.

IMO... go down there, spend as much money as you can (they could use the influx of cash), and enjoy yourself!

I cannot speak to "going from orange to red" but I can tell you that things seem fairly typical for divers. I just got back from Cozumel on the 26th for a 5 day trip. Passport/customs took 10 minutes to go through.
I stayed at Casa Mexicana that seemed pretty full, mostly with divers. I dove with Aldora and their operation was almost fully booked. I had a great time diving, with dives lasting 65-85 minutes.
La Choza and La Mission are open as usual; the Thirsty Cougar one block north of the hotel is a great bar with nice margaritas. Mask compliance is nearly 100% outdoors. Overall, it was a great short vacation. Enjoy yours!

Is there a chance that you'll have to quarantine when you return home?

Maybe I should say, does the US have quarantine restrictions for certain countries? (Not from the US!)

Probably does not matter, but I just realized I said trip was in a couple weeks; it is actually almost four. As of now, no requirement to quarantine on return.

Then go! They need the money! Follow the rules on masks as its for them not us vaccinated people. Enjoy!!!!!!!

Just about everything is open! Dive ops are busy. I see almost complete compliance with masking in town. That said, I have not ventured in the days the cruise ships have been in port. The grocery stores are enforcing the one family member at a time rule. Some resorts may not be enforcing Covid mandates from what I have read. Who knows if the current orange status will change. My guess would be no. The cruise ship business just started up again, going Red would put a stop to it. That would be devastating.
Come, enjoy yourselves!

I don't think that's true of Kinta. Kinta and Kondesa are owned by the same people, and I believe when things improve to the point where there is enough business to support them both, Kinta will reopen. All our other faves were open.

I was there in May. I masked in Mega, in cabs, and while being seated in restaurants. I didn't mask outside, but I avoided close contact with anyone outside my group when I wasn't masked. I didn't mask on dive or fishing boats and neither did the other passengers or crews. The restaurants were mostly open and very happy to have customers, and personnel were mostly masked.

We had to get COVID tested in order to return to the US, but the hotel contacted a mobile testing service to come and do it. The service sent the results to the hotel and they printed them for presentation at the airport. I don't believe anyone thinks the stoplight will go to red any time soon, but the pandemic is still a dynamic situation.

Hope that helps; if you are vaccinated I say go for it.

I got my first Covid test today before flying Saturday. I've been fully vaxed since February, but want to be save. I got to do my own swabbing so that was nice.
