I came into possession of two tanks that a previous owner's kid had 'livened up' by purposefully dripping paint all over it. ... I'd like to see if I can strip that layer of paint. ...

Edit: I forgot to mention they are steel.

@BassO,

One of my OMS (Faber) LP 46's developed blisters under the tank boot. I took the tank to my local vo-tech high school, and they bead-blasted away all the paint. I then spray painted the tank with some zinc paint. Worked fine. (Tank is used only in fresh water.)

My hp 100’s took a beating on the finish so I painted them, first orange than yellow a while ago the were due for a viz and coming up on hydro so I stripped off the paint using some citrus stuff just to get back to the original finish, got the hydro and repainted them

Used this stuff this time and they are holding up well.

Galvanized 100’s weren’t available when I bought these tanks.

Magnificent!

You know I use two orings on the hanging valves so the paint creeps around the corner

Zip strip has methylene chloride in it and is pretty bad for you. Definitely only use outdoors
Uh I disagree specs for Zip Strip stated below:

Zip-Strip Premium Paint & Varnish Remover is a VOC compliant, non-flammable, methylene chloride free, water rinse-able and low odor formula ideal for indoor or outdoor projects where ventilation is minimal. A safe alternative for furniture refinishing, it gently strips away paint and varnish without raising the wood grain and it can also be used on metal, masonry and glass.
  • VOC-free, biodegradable ingredients
  • Safe to use on wood, glass, metal, masonry and auto finishes
  • Semi-gel, water rinse-able formula
  • Dibasic ester is the active solvent
  • Methylene chloride free
  • Non-toxic

The remade themselves because California basically banned them because of the MeCL in their old formulation (which is still on some store shelves). The older can in my garage definitely has MeCL in it, although I have switched to the citrus-strip which works pretty well. As long as the temperature is 70+F. Its 40F out now and stripping more tanks will have to wait until next spring for me, nothing works when its cold out.

I just took my steels down to bare metal with that stripper. There were enough gaps in the original zinc coating that I did a Rustoleum Cold Zinc repaint. But the zinc is very powdery and comes right off. So I spot repainted the gaps and then did a semi gloss spray Rustoleum poly overcoat
Came out great! And it's been durable.

@rsingler What is the exact name of the Rustoleum poly overcoat product? Is it still protecting the cold zinc repaint well? All I can find is polyurethane for floors.

I lied. It was satin, not semigloss.

At hydro, for an extra whopping $11, they will blast and paint my steel tanks. They look like brand new when done. I always get my steel 72s done.

That would be awesome. I never asked if they would do that for my 72's... Will ask this week. /fingers crosses
