Status of Left Lean and Right Rich Philosophy in B/M Open Circuit Technical Diving

Who still uses (and teaches) Left Lean / Right Rich deco gas cylinder gas placement in O/C?

  • Heck no, I don't prescribe to that antiquated, inappropriate system.

  • I was just recently taught that way.

  • I've been diving that way for years and I am not dead yet.

  • I've not only successfully dived that way for years I teach it!

There's a 6 pack that runs out of Hatteras (Outer Banks of North Carolina - The Under Pressure, with Capt JT Barker) that has a lift. He's had that for years. Some of my slightly-older-than-me friends who are purely recreational still LOVE that lift. Even a single tank rig can feel pretty heavy when you're climbing a ladder in 4 - 5 foot seas and you have a finicky knee or back.

(6 pack? Is that a boat with 6 divers?)

If it is, they're often very bouncy and not for the puke-sensitive!

The most common sizes around here (south UK) are 10 to 12 divers. With covid we're not allowed in the cabins yet; hoping that'll change by June.

“6 pack” is the minimum commercial captains license in the US. You can take max of 6 paying passengers.

Another big difference between six packs and larger vessels is that they are uninspected. Carrying more than six passengers requires USCG to inspect the vessel regularly. So you sometimes you captain might have a 100T or higher license but if he doesn't want to go through the annoyance of dealing with an inspected vessel (or the market doesn't support larger boats) they can run a six pack.

My understanding in the UK the maximum passenger count for uninspected vessels is higher, IIRC someone told me 10 passengers.

FTFY. :D

I have been on boats where "the sidemount diver" couldn't even get his own primary tanks clipped on without help...

This is annoying. I made sure to master this in my living room before I ever tried it on a boat. I haven't done boat deco dives in side mount, but I'm sure with a little practice I could clip two additional 80s on and back roll/walk in.

A 4 bottle SM dive off a boat is just dumb. Maybe its do-able with bare hands, but really the wrong tool for the job.

I'm not sure it is a good idea in a cave either.

A 4 bottle cave dive?

so a stage and a deco bottle?

what’s your better solution?

I was thinking two stage as the deco botlle is only on for a short amount of time.

A- If you are conducting dives that require 2 deco bottles, get a CCR :)
2 - Who still slings deco bottles anyway? Aside from quick carries (ie entering off a boat or taking an O2 bottle into a cave), side mount those bastards.
4- I have never carried 2 deco bottles for OC. Because I have a CCR. But I do carry my BO LLRR and sidemounted.
