No one here is comparing GUE, TDI, or Navy Dive and Salvage School except you. All I did was tease Akimbo a bit as we all do in the locker or berthing many moons ago. With that said, I am happy you found a civilian diving path, and I hope you continue to do so for many years. Nevertheless, if you would like to take a Fundamentals class with GUE, I highly recommend it. However, I understand it is not an end-all-be-all to diving, and whatever diving agency you choose is entirely up to you, my friend.

The other services do similar stuff but squids just seem to have real knack for abusing the English language and each other. Being cooped up in berthing together and exploring third word sites on liberty famous for debauchery give us a bond that allows even the worst seemingly cruel taunting to be laughed off.
They are the guy's I'd want on a deep air dive because anyone with their tolerance for alcohol and abuse mean 6 martini dives are lots safer than actually going drinking with them.

My first sea dive in 5 months tomorrow has just been called off because the weather -- which has been great for two weeks -- has just turned nasty. Have 6 dives booked over the next 6 days and am hoping to get at least one of them. Now, about this debauchery, where can we sign up?

I signed up, the 'debauchery' was just 'par for the course', and told to drink responsibly which means ,Don't spill any.
Now on topic: No more deep air for me, and what is the starting point [depth] for "deep air" today?

The first rule of debauchery is to go where the CO warned you not to go. In most ports that would mean bars meant to attract American servicemen and mariners. I had the good fortune to visit a few but there was no diving suggested.
But we did a lot of freediving and snorkeling after letting off steam.
The military travel plan was better than anything I could have afforded. In only 6 years, I probably got to get wet in at least a dozen countries from the Azores to the Caymans.
