UK diving

hey guys,

I’m planning to dive in the UK somewhere next year. Interested in doing some quarry and lake diving. Would be great if I could see some seals along the way. Hopefully by then I would have gotten my drysuit cert done with but if it doesn’t work out, I am more than happy to do it there.

The current idea is to head to Brighton from London and maybe make my way up north to Edinburgh. Would be great if some of you can provide me with some insight, centres and prices.

P.S. I’d love to meet up with anyone who’s interested either for a pint or as a buddy !

Farne islands for seals I think, definitely drysuit territory. Alternatively Lundy island, but that's off your route.

I understand viz tends to be better at the west end of the channel, so somewhere like Plymouth is a good base but there's diving at most coastal towns. The season for me in the southwest is year round but sea diving is often weather limited after September through to March/April-ish.

The UK is fairly small so most places are only a train ride away. Equipment hire is not so easy here - something to check beforehand. Dive ops are used to folks turning up with pretty much everything.

If you consider venturing to the west country, I'd recommend Vobster Quay or NDAC (Chepstow) as a couple of good inland options.

Funny you should mention it Graham, I'm off training at Vobster next week. It's a well run site with hot food and warm showers in the middle of nowhere!

Plenty to see there and enough depth, although we're only going to be around 12m.

There are dive boats out of Brighton. There's also a shop there which might be able to sort you out with kit hire. Selsey is another nearby option.

Can't imagine why anyone would travel here to dive muddy puddles. Get in the sea instead.

If it makes no difference to you, you’ll have probably better diving in the Isle of Portland by Weymouth, rather than Brighton.

I mainly need cylinders (haven’t decided if I want to go OC or CCR) and a drysuit rental. I’ve read about Farne, gonna do more research. Thanks for the info.

I doubt it’ll be 1 or 2 pints haha. Most likely going to be cold.

Revisiting my uni. Taking be opportunity to dive in the UK which I have never done before.

I’m open to all ideas, no solid plan as of yet but Brighton is a must.

If you end up in Norfolk, there is a lot of good diving off the coast there, summertime you won't need a dry suit either. If you do, speak to Christal seas scuba in Norwich, they will know of a lot of people who would be willing to join you i would say.

You could also visit Stoney cove near Lutterworth for an inland quarry, and its very close to the motorway too. Lots to see and good facilities in there
