If they’re downloading the dive data and discussing it in classroom afterwards, they need to standardize on something. Shearwater makes a good computer and is better than most about software openness. It’s slightly sketchy they’re encouraging students to use their computer rental fleet, depending on how much they milk that, but it does have a fig-leaf of justification.

I figured there'd be a fig leaf, at the very least.

Chatterton automatically loses points for bad spelling, etc., on his website.

All the tech divers I’ve ever seen on the boat, at a quarry, in online photos, etc. all use Shearwater computers.

Not defending the mandated Shearwater, just wondering how many tech divers actually use another brand of computer?

Though a little smaller the Teric can show the exact same amount of information as the Perdix AI. Sure in big mode you do get less information, but you can ban that, not just the Teric as a whole.

Every computer on the market has a decompression algorithm and there are plenty of divers doing deco dives with various computers that aren't Shearwater. And likewise there are plenty of no stop divers using Shearwaters with no intention of getting into mandatory deco.

I think the requirement every student have a Perdix or Petrel is silly. Instead I would have phrased the requirement to state that "whatever computer you use needs to run Buhlman ZHL-16 so the class and buddy teams can all plan and execute their dive using the same algorithm."

The Teric runs the same algorithm and spits out the same log as any other Shearwater computer. It's a dumb statement and requirement.

His practices remain disconnected from modern safety practices. This computer statement is as "special" as @rddvet describes.

My Teric in Tec mode shows me all the relevant info as my Petrel 2 does. Been using both next to each other the last two weeks cave diving. The downloads from the Teric look the same and give the same graph options..

edit: I had different GFs on the computers, hence the slightly different deco obligations. Buddy took longer to clear, so 10 mins extra deco...

Huh? Other than the lack of a fischer port option, I thought all shearwater computers function the same and display identical data. Am I wrong?

In order to prevent speculation I e-mailed Chatterton this morning to inquire as to why he establishes this requirement. He was extremely quick on the response and very open to the question. He gave me permission to paraphrase his response on SB as to the reason he does not allow the Teric as a primary. in his classes.

1. The Teric does not allow you to change GF High while diving, while the Perdix and Petrel do.
2. The larger screen size of the Perdix and Petrel allow you to see more data on the screen without having to scroll screens to see other data elements.

As I look through the Manuals for Perdix and Teric I can find in the Perdix manual where it indicates that GF High (not GF Low) can be adjusted while diving while the Teric manual makes no mention of it. I e-mailed Shearwater this morning to find out if the Teric can do that. (I am not rendering an opinion on whether or not this feature is necessary)

The Teric has a configurable display. But in the standard display is has the same amount of screen slots.
