I know that costs are high on Little Cayman but still willing to go there one day for the superior diving. I'm wondering where would be the most affordable place to stay for a week (or less) if I was to go myself. I'm willing to stay at a condo/apartment, room in a house or pay a single supplement at one of the resorts but would like the best pricing option.

Look at Air bnb or better yet call one of the local dive shops. If someone has a roommate off island, they may be willing to put you up to help cover costs. DMs will also know cheapest accommodations and have a different access point from visitors

The Scubaboard Surge trip will be at Little Cayman Beach Resort in January 2020, see the link below. There is a $500 single supplement but perhaps there is another SB member that is looking to share. I don't know if they still have any space but it might be worth checking.

Payments are due Oct 1 so act fast if you are interested!

If that doesn't work for you, then look online for a dive shop offering a group trip to LC and see if you can sign up with them and perhaps share with somebody.

Or consider traveling during the low season when prices are cheaper and pay the single supplement.

There are places to rent accommodations on LC but eating may get expensive. There is one small food store with limited supplies, a liquor store, and the Hungry Iguana restaurant. There are a few other restaurants/bars that are associated with the resorts at: Little Cayman Beach Resort, Southern Cross Club, and Pirates Pointe - but they pricey, especially when you are not on a package that includes food and lodging.

I am sure that you could arrange a dive package with one of the dive ops but you will probably need to rent a car. So by the time you add up the food, diving, accommodations, and car rental I don't think that you are going to save much, and it is more convenient to stay at a dedicated dive resort.

LCBR runs specials during the year, so you might trying call Reef Fantaseas, their usual booking agents, and tell them what you are looking for and see if they can offer anything attractive. Or they may be willing to forward your name and email to the leader of a group trip that might work for you.

Please tell us what you figure out because this is a common question, good luck!

Thanks for all the info. I specifically want my own room rather than share so this does complicates things a bit for me. Fortunately I am willing to go during their off season which might help a bit for rates.

I don't blame you for that! The SB Surge is listing a $500 surcharge for single occupancy at LCBR so that is not terrible, but it's still $500 bucks.

You would probably have better luck looking for a deal on Cayman Brac or Grand Cayman, but LC tends to book up fast and you don't see many bargains, except some lower (but still high) prices during the off season.

LCBR is advertising their Holiday Special from mid-November to mid-January, see link below. I don't know if they still have any availability or how much it would cost for the single supplement (and you would have to pay extra for afternoon dives and nitrox if desired) but this may be the best price you can expect to find for a resort package on LC during January - which is part of the peak season.

From time to time, LCBR offers a special that drops the single supplement cost. I would get on the clearly Cayman email list and watch for that to come around. The other best option is probably something like Conch Club condos or an airBnB/VRBO type rental.

Having just come back from the Galapagos, I think my next dive trip would be either a short one in November or from May to next November in 2020. But more likely May/June.

There aren't a lot of choices for accommodations on Little Cayman, single to a room.

Cost wise your best bet is likely to be Paradise Villas and dive with Conch Club Divers. Look for specials on Paradise Villas website. I know they run specials in late August, which is a great time to go to Little Cayman.

Pricing out side of November to early May is low season. Dates are approximate.

I really don't know of many other single rooms outside of the resorts, or a few condos for rent. (Which will be more expensive.)
