Wow....who made hose protectors out to be "horrors"....did you drink a few ounces of hyperbole this morning?

An opinion based on personal experience and the experience of others is that hose protectors do not really add much protection and with regard to your example of coiling for transport...well, then I double down on my sentiment because miflex type hoses can coil very tightly for transport without affecting the hose/fitting junction. My hoses get inspected every time I put my reg set on a bottle, which has been at least once a week for the past few year (pool work and/or diving outside)....I don't have to do anything special to visually inspect them because there is nothing to obstruct the view of the hose fittings.

I have no problem with those who want to use hose fittings if one likes to have adornments on their gear but the rubber/plastic things don't really protect against much....and its not a horror story to state that unless one is fastidious with moving those covers, and some are much more difficult to move than others, that one can experience corrosion at the hose fittings.

Perhaps there is a reason miflex doesn't put them on their hoses.

Was not directed at you and was intended as sarcastic - hence the quotes? Sorry, it that nuance was lost on you...

I’ve read countless times here in how hose protectors are a bad thing - the reality is that with negligible effort, I actually find them to be a good thing and was just sharing my personal experience as an input to the OP.

I never said anyone needs to use them or that they are needed on Miflex hoses - so I am really not interested in arguing about virtues of them with you - I was just sharing my opinion and I as very clearly said “ dive as you like”!

I didn't take it personally. Your quotes came across as an attempt at adding emphasis to your point at the behest of the opposing argument. We are obviously in two different camps on the subject. Live and let dive.

Cheers,

C'mon, think that one through... hose manufacturers on the whole do not put hose protectors on, and I suspect never have. They are added when mated to a 1st and/or 2nd stage - usually with brand specific design, and even 2nd stage specific design. Whether or not Miflex hoses benefit from them, I would never expect to see them included with the hose purchase - unless buying the hose from a regulator manufacturer, many (most? all?) of whom do include hose protectors on their regulator sets.

So @JonnyDiver198 if you want to add protectors to your Miflex hoses and can't find any generic style that fits, find a regulator brand that adds them to Miflex, and if you can live with that brand on your hoses then have an LDS order up a set for you. (and for fun I just checked the Aqualung parts list, and yes they have separate hose protectors for braided hoses.)

Read higher up in the thread....I mention that the hose protectors are just another place for a manufacturer to slap their brand name.

Color me lazy then. But I like the fact that I don't have to pull anything back to rinse and inspect

This also helps to put on/off condom catheters easier :).

About the hose protectors Zef is right, they aren’t useful for anything and they might do more wrong then good. Salt gets everywhere and rinsing it might not be enough.

Interesting topic: are hose protectors required (or even useful)?

There is a huge variety of applications for hoses. Scuba is a very small niche - my last batch of hoses got flagged as automotive parts by customs.

Does anyone know of another hose application where protectors are recommended / used?

My experience is limited but I do know that none of the high pressure hydraulic hoses on a garbage truck use them...

You gotta love folks that speak in absolutes on what is opinion - it must be an amazing feeling when your opinion is just better than everyone else's!

So... please do share where salt "gets" with a hose protector that it doesn't get without one? I suppose rinsing won't remove these magical salt deposits when a hose with a hose protector is rinsed properly as well... and to avoid any confusion: yes, this is sarcasm!

The ironic thing is that my Atomic regulator hoses and Halcyon inflator hose are branded, but the hose protectors are not - I guess I better ditch those hoses as they must be not really needed

The hoses on all of my pressure washers have non removable hose protectors/strain relief on both ends as do many of my garden hoses - likely as extra protection from kinking!
