I served in the US Air Force for 7 years, but was never stationed in Cuba. I work with people that were there. Last year, I had a job prospect as a contractor, was seriously considering it, but I didn’t want it bad enough I guess.

Dang it....my response was actually meant for @reep39, but thank you for your service and if you find yourself in Cozumel when we are there, I'll gladly buy you a beer as well!

I'd be too scared to travel to ANY Police State (China, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Venezuela...Cuba all come to mind.) Americans have no special protections/human rights there and no rule-of-law or recourse if the govt decides to grab you off the street and charge you with anything they want, you are totally screwed!
You are living in a police state with a government that can grab you off the street and charge you with anything they want.

How hard is it for you to walk off base? And if you can walk off base, how hard is it to get back on base? Cuba has great diving, I'm not sure that it is to found in the treaty area of Guantanamo Bay

There is a lot of beginner type stuff, great for me, some big lobster auch gut fur mich  and some cool things to see. Never got to learn to do this in Bamberg when I was there. Making the most of a dream here.

Gotta agree, the whole 7th Cav area (Fulda Gap down to Nurnberg n Ansbach) was SOL regarding divable lakes. How did you ever end up in GITMO, since I assume that you were Army during your Warner Bks times?

There were / are some nice spots a little bit to the east. You would have just had to cross the border.

When did USA stop the folk from leaving GITMO?

It was years ago that I was in Varadero but we met some guys on our hotel beach. I suppose that they could have been Canadian guys that were fibbing but hey, what do I know?

So, has this always been a thing that the staff and crew on base aren't allowed out?
