For example, in Canada, the Guardian Plan does indeed cover non-diving accident to a max. of $20,000. Is that enough if you get into a serious car accident? Probably not if you need surgery, critical care and hospitalization.

In some places in the world, $20,000 might get you the poshest hospital in the city with western-trained doctors at your beck and call.

There's some really frightening stories out there. Did you read the one about the young man who's insurance refuses to pay because he bought it on line?

That's the second link in my post.

I am aware of the horror stories, that's why I usually have overlapping coverage, but I'm kind of lucky that my firm already has travel medical built in to our workplace health insurance plan.

Gosh, those stories you linked to make me question my belief that Mexico is an affordable place to have medical procedures. Maybe they’re jumping on the bandwagon, having realized they weren’t charging as much as tourists (or their insurance) were capable of paying. Then again, maybe what costs 100k in Mexico would cost a million in the US.

There are a lot of those types of horror stories coming from Mexico. I suspect some of the costs are as a result of gouging.

I've been unlucky to have spent over $1million on healthcare in the past several years, so yeah, I'm conservative! Lucky for me, Ontario paid for most of the treatment costs, and my work insurance covered my drug costs. If not, I think I might as well just died.

I carry both DAN dive insurance for all dive trips, and depending on where I am travelling, for how long, evacuation/repatriation costs, and non-refundable trip costs, I also carry separate travel insurance. Realizing it is insurance, and if you don't use it, you wasted money on the policy; but if you do need to use it, you have to weigh how financially painful it might be to pay the entire bill out of your own resources. I have seen more than a few instances of devastating financial setbacks for people that lost the insurance Russian Roulette.

That's the thing about insurance, isn't it?

Hello,
what kind of insurance coverage do you have when you travel abroad?
Right now I have no coverage at all...
I am considering DAN which is some kind of standard choice for divers. Though, I would like to understand exactly what it covers and in general which is the best choice
If you happen to need medical treatment due to a non diving activity, for example, a car accident when you travel abroad, does DAN cover the expenses?
What kind of travel and medical insurances do you purchase when you travel abroad for diving, and also let me say non diving trips, for example if you want to dedicate one week to visit the country and one week to diving in the country?
Thanks

You may wish to consider the following dive insurance package which covers not only the diving component of the trip but the trip in general.

Definitely worth a look and you'll find the premiums cost effective also.

I hope their insurance is better than the equipment setup in their marketing picture! Hanging kinda low, there.....
